Robotics, Teamwork, Problem-Solving Skills Highlighted at School Board

VEX team tells Waukesha School Board what they learned from robotics this year.

The robotics team from Saratoga STEM wowed the Waukesha School Board last night with a presentation about VEX robotics.

The team participated in competitions earlier in the school year, earning a spot to travel to the VEX World Championships in Orlando, FL, in April.

Members of the team, Colin Gilgenbach, Andrew Labott and Lexus Stokes, shared what they learned from the experience, the benefits of the VEX program, demonstrated the robot for the school board members and thanked the school district for its support.

Some things they learned from the experience were 21st century skills of collaboration and problem-solving.

“When you work with VEX, you build reliance on your teammates to help achieve certain goals and meet challenges," Stokes said. "This can help in the future, in upcoming education, careers and for life.”

"We had to learn how to work together," she said.

"What a wonderful statement because that's exactly what we members of the board have to do all the time," School Board member Barbara Brzenk said, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Board members asked the students questions about the competitions and how much time they spent in their efforts.

More than one school board member said they were impressed by the team and proud of the progress they made this year.

"We're very proud of you guys," School Board member Karin Rajnicek said.. "You've learned so much and those are life-long skills."
