As runner Bradley Woodford gets ready to depart Waukesha South this year for the University of Minnesota, he is recognized for his astounding academic achievement by the WIAA.
Bradley Woodford, a senior at Waukesha South High School, was selected as a 2013 scholar athlete by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association. Thirty-two scholar athlete finalists, both boys and girls, were chosen from among 750 seniors nominated by more than 375 high schools in the state. Woodford, along with the other finalists, will be recognized at an awards ceremony Sunday, May 5 at the Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau. Former Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packer Bill Ferrario will speak at the ceremony. Woodford, a 4.0 GPA student, has excelled in a number of cross country and track & field events during his four years at Waukesha South. Bill Prochniewski won a title in 113-pound weight division at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Waukesha South senior Bill Prochniewski was crowned a state champion Saturday at the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison. Prochniewski won over La Crosse Central's Ben Thornton in the 113-pound final to finish the season with a 47-2 record. Earlier in the state tournament, he had defeated Henry Prange of Bay Port 13-3, then pinned Jerrott Holz of Menomonee Falls. In the semifinals he scored an 8-6 decision over Colin Kraus of Stoughton.

Two athletes from Waukesha South, one from Waukesha West and one from Catholic Memorial made it through last week's sectionals.
Four Waukesha wrestlers qualified for the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament, beginning Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison. Waukesha South senior Bill Prochniewski (33-9) meets Henry Prange of Bay Port (20-16) at 113 pounds in his first-round match. South's junior Brock Milkent (35-6) meets senior Jessie Nelson of Stoughton (50-1) at 285 pounds. Waukesha West senior Nick Delapaz (25-11) meets Jared Scharenbrock of Sun Prairie (42-0) at 145 pounds. Catholic Memorial senior Justin Dentici (39-5) meets Lucas Stephenson of Sturgeon Bay (41-2) at 182 pounds. Preliminaries begin at 3 p.m. Thursday and finals are at 6 p.m. Saturday. After placing high in a number of events, ten swimmers from area Waukesha schools will be competing this weekend at the state meet.
Ten Waukesha swimmers qualified to compete this weekend at the WIAA Division 1 State Meet in Madison after placing high in a number of events at sectional. Over the weekend the co-op Waukesha North/Kettle Moraine placed second at sectional with a score of 313. Trailing right behind in third place was Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial with a score of 295. Waukesha West/Mukwonago placed seventh with a score of 173. Waukesha South/CatholicMemorial senior Alex Swain will be competing in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle. The Stars, comprised of Brookfield East and Central players, will be joined by those from Catholic Memorial, previously part of a co-op with Pius XI.
The Brookfield Stars co-op hockey team has absorbed the Waukesha Catholic Memorial team to create a three-school co-op, the schools have announced. Catholic Memorial’s head coach, Steve Chapin, will coach the new team, according to a press release. A former Brookfield Stars head coach, Matt Shapiro, will be his assistant. The team will play its games at the Ponds of Brookfield but practice in the mornings at Eble Ice Arena. According to the release, the schools were unable to reach agreement with the Ponds on a practice time that would best fit the program. Brookfield reached the semifinals of the WIAA tournament last year, defeating Eau Claire Memorial 3-2 in overtime before falling 6-3 to Wausau West in the semis. Catholic Memorial had …

Team is slated to play Milwaukee Riverside in a first round match Friday at Pulaski Stadium.
Messmer/Shorewood quarterback Taylor Dennis said he was in class when he heard the news his team was playoff-bound. "My face just lit up, I was so excited," he said. Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Kevin Martens issued a temporary judgment Tuesday saying the WIAA must consider the football program for the playoffs and release the playoff pairings that includes the team. Playoffs start Friday and although Martens didn’t say when the pairings needed to be released, the WIAA issued playoff brackets shortly after.
