The Federal Aviation Administration extended the closure deadline of 149 traffic control towers, including Crites Field, to give airports more time to execute the changes to the National Airspace System
The closure of the Waukesha County Airport/Crites Field traffic control tower has been delayed to June 15. The Federal Aviation Administration had previously planned to close several Wisconsin airport towers in April and May, including the tower at Waukesha County Airport. The Wisconsin closures are part of 149 other traffic control tower closures across the country due to $637 million budget cuts under sequestration. Extending the deadline will give the FAA and airports more time to execute the changes to the National Airspace System, according to a release from the FAA. The FAA also indicated that approximately 50 airport authorities and other stakeholders across the country have indicated they may join the FAA’s non-Federal Contract …

Waukesha County officials are concerned about the cuts, which would leave the third busiest airport in Wisconsin without an air traffic controller, because of safety and economic reasons.
The Waukesha County Airport/Crites Field traffic control tower could cease operations April 7 due to federal budget cuts. Airports in La Crosse, Janesville, Oshkosh, Milwaukee (Timmerman), Kenosha, Eau Claire and Mosinee could also lose air traffic control funding, according to USA Today. Waukesha is the third busiest airport in Wisconsin. Airport General Manager Kurt Stanich told Waukesha Now the airport has 60,000 takeoffs and landings a year, adding the cuts are “unnecessary.” "It would be a huge blow to air traffic safety," Stanich told Waukesha Now. "It's unfortunate, because they are essential." Waukesha County Supervisor Michael Crowley, is also against the cuts to the Waukesha County Airport. About 200 aircrafts are based at the …
The air traffic control tower could be cut as the federal government attempts to reduce 5 percent of expenses. But how will that affect the third busiest airport in Wisconsin?
Editor's Note: The following letter to the editor was submitted by Waukesha County Supervisor Michael Crowley. There is the potential of the air traffic control tower closure here at Waukesha County Airport/Crites Field because of federal budget cuts that may take effect due to the requirement for federal agencies to cut about 5 percent from their overall budgets. Since Congress and the President were unable to reach a different deal before the sequester deadline, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has informed us this week that they may close the tower here at Waukesha County Airport/Crites Field that is operated by Midwest ATC Services, Inc. Although the FAA did not specify the date when the tower would close, we have learned …

More than 180 federal employees who work in Waukesha County could potentially be affected by sequester, which is slated to start Friday.
Unless Congress reaches a last-minute agreement on the sequester by Friday, the huge budget cuts slated to kick in have the potential to affect more than 185 federal employees working in Waukesha County. Barring any kind of deal, the Obama administration will have to impose $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts to military and domestic programs on Friday, according to The New York Times. Those cuts would be the start of $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade. The numbers in the graph above show the number of federal employees in Wisconsin by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. Report released Sunday by Obama administration details more than a dozen areas in which federal aid would be cut — primarily in education and health care.
Wisconsin would see more than $27 million in federal funds cut from a myriad of programs if Congress fails to act this week to avoid the sequester, the Obama administration said Sunday. In a move designed to pressure Republicans into accepting new revenues as part of a deal to prevent the sequester from taking effect on Friday, the White House released reports that outlined how those cuts would impact individual states, The Huffington Post reported. In Wisconsin, most of the $27.4 million in looming cuts would affect education programs, the report said. For example, the state would lose $8.5 million in funding for primary and secondary education, putting around 120 teacher and teacher aide jobs at risk. Wisconsin also would lose about $10.…
