Patch Picks: Five Great Children’s Books

Keep the tradition of Read Across America going with these top picks.

Last week people throughout the United States participated in Read Across America. To keep the tradition going past last week, we found a few books that appeal to children of various ages. 1. American Girl Series The historical series reaches girls who are in the later elementary school years. Tales girls living during the Great Depression, World War II, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and more will stay with your daughters far past the first time they read the stories about the different characters. They will read tales of bravery, shenanigans and learning with the characters in the books while learning about themselves.   2. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie From the Waukesha Public Library website:  “If a hungry little traveler shows up…

For younger kids, of course Dr. Suess and Eric Carle can't be overlooked. But to keep in the spirit of "appealing to children of various ages" I have to mention Kevin Henkes. He is a local writer/illustrator (from Racine, now living in Madison) who has won both the Newbery Honor and Caldecott Medal. His picture books include Kitten's First Full Moon (for which he won the Caldecott) and Little …   more ›

Patch Picks: Five Great Boutiques in Waukesha

Waukesha Patch takes a look at five specialty stores this week.

Waukesha is full of tiny little surprises. Waukesha Patch took a look at five different boutiques in the city where people can find unique items that are special to the area. 1. Little Swiss Clock Shop A long-time downtown staple, the Little Swiss Clock Shop is characterized by the giant stuffed Winnie the Pooh that greets customers as they step in the store. The store has a selection from watches and small clocks to grandfather clocks. The store also provides repairs for your family heirlooms. 2. Serendipity Scrapbooks This store, which is newer to the downtown area, offers supplies that you need to turn your photos into scrapbooks with your added sense of personality and style. The store has areas to work on your projects and includes …

Patch Picks: Five Non-Profit Groups That Are Making A Difference in Our Community

This week we look at area organizations that strive to help the community.

Five Nonprofit Groups That Are Making A Difference in Our Community 1. NEW BEGINNINGS CHRISTIAN CHURCH The church itself does not have a permanent building, as it holds services in a city parks and recreation building. Still, the church goes beyond its borders and is active in community help organizations. The church finds needs – although it has its own needs – and seeks to better the community. 2. HEBRON HOUSE OF HOSPITALITY Hebron House of Hospitality takes in people who have no home and gives them a warm bed and fights to help turn their lives around. Beyond providing a warm place to sleep at night despite controversy and concerned neighbors, the organization works to find permanent housing solutions for people to get them back on …

Patch Picks: Valentine's Day Dinner for Your Sweetheart

Waukesha Patch looks at five romantic restaurants to take your Valentine this week. We asked some of our readers and included their responses and added a few of our own.

• Generations at 5 Points.  The lounge is in the heart of downtown Waukesha and offers a setting to grab a bottle of wine and dine with your significant other. This idea came from a reader on the Waukesha Patch Facebook account. www.facebook.com/WaukeshaPatch • Le Caffe Bistro. For those looking for something a little more low key, the coffee shop has small desserts and lattes. You can snuggle up on the couches by the fireplace or pretend you are in France when eating by its mural.  •J Lotti’s Pub & Grill, 225 South Street. J. Lotti's has a special Valentine's Day dinner planned, including chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne. • D Mo’s Pasta and Chop House.
