The new Aaron Rodgers-Ryan Braun restaurant, 8-twelve MVP Bar & Grill, held a private big bash Sunday night to celebrate its grand opening in the Town of Brookfield. Among those in the packed crowd: the two MVPs, Surg Restaurant Group owner Omar Shaik, Gov. Scott Walker and his wife and sons, Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto and Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas. The Business Journal was there and snapped these shots. Ponto, who attended with his wife Mary, said the party was packed and the restaurant was a great experience. So what does he recommend? Updated (Feb. 3): An appeals court has vacated a Waukesha County Circuit Court's order that state elections officials do more to ferret out duplicate signatures on Recall Walker petitions, saying the court erred in not allowing recall organizers to intervene in the case. The decision by the Court of Appeals District IV panel based in Madison means Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. Mac Davis will need to re-hear the case, allowing for input from representatives of both campaigns — that of Gov. Scott Walker and the recalls. Scott Walker warmed a crowd several thousand people strong Saturday, igniting what will be a months-long battle to save the governor's office. United Wisconsin, the main recall group, says it has 300,000-plus signatures; GOP calls the effort a "baseless, partisan power-grab."
Just one day short of two weeks since the effort began, the group behind the move to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker said Monday it has gathered more than 300,000 signatures — more than half the number needed to force a recall election. Wisconsinites were signing the recall petition at the rate of 1,040 per hour, according to Wisconsin United, the main group behind the effort. In the first 96 hours of the recall effort, which began Nov. 15, more than 105,000 signatures were collected from all 72 counties in Wisconsin. The group needs 540,208 valid signatures by Jan. 17 to force an election, and organizers say they hope to gather between 600,00 and 700,000 signatures. Gov. Scott Walker has appointed Waukesha County Circuit Judge Mark Gundrum, a former longtime Republican state legislator, to serve as an appellate court judge. Gundrum, who replaces Appellate Judge Daniel P. Anderson, will have to run for election in April to the District II Court of Appeal based in Waukesha. Gundrum served in the state Assembly from 1999 until April 2010, when he was elected to the circuit court bench defeating Rick Congdon, who had been appointed by Democratic Gov. Saying the concealed carry law has raised significant questions under review, state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen today answered frequently asked questions on his state web site. The 49-page resource is available on the state Department of Justice web site here. There is a link on the DOJ's home page from a box titled "Concealed Carry Law." Under the law signed last month by Gov. Scott Walker, citizens who obtain a proper permit and undergo training will be able to carry concealed weapons starting Nov. 1, with some exceptions. A Dane County judge today struck down the controversial budget repair bill that eliminated most collective bargaining for most public employees. Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi released a 33-page decision Thursday nullifying Act 10, which prompted thousands of protestors to crowd the state Capitol for weeks. But the decision, posted on The Wheeler Report, will not end the litigation. The state Supreme Court has been asked to consider the case, and state legislators are preparing to re-insert the collective bargaining changes in the state's 2011-13 budget. At least one legislator — Independent Rep. Bob Ziegelbauer of Manitowoc — is trying to add police, fire and other public safety workers to the collective bargaining changes. They …

Soaring gas prices drive more motorists to switch to bikes.
Gov. Scott Walker has designated May as Motorcycle Awareness and Safety Month in Wisconsin. "Motorcyclists have the right by law to the safe enjoyment of their vehicles, including the full and equal use of the roadway without encroachment by other vehicles whether it be on city streets or rural and urban highways," Walker said in his proclomation. Motorcycles are increasingly being used for basic transportation as well as recreation because of soaring gas prices. More than 491,000 Wisconsin residents have motorcycle licenses or permits and more than 333,000 motorcycles are registered in the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
