Criminal Charge Being Recommended in Saturday's Apartment Building Fire, Waukesha Police Say

Police department is recommending misdemeanor charge against 29-year-old man who lived in apartment where fire started.

A misdemeanor charge of negligent handling of burning materials is being recommended against a 29-year-old man who lived in the apartment that was destroyed in Saturday’s fire, said Capt. Dennis Angle in a news release on Thursday. The man, who is not being identified by Waukesha Patch until formal charges are filed by the Waukesha County District Attorney’s office, initially reported he was giving his children a bath and returned to his room to find a mattress on fire. The Waukesha Fire Department later identified the origin of the fire to be a candle. Angle in an interview Thursday said the man has been cooperative with the investigation and with authorities.
