First Full Freeway Closings Set for This Week

Some lane and ramp closures began Wednesday, and on Friday and Saturday I-894 will be closed completely from the Zoo Interchange to National Avenue for demolition of Greenfield Ave. overpass.

The first major freeway closures are set for the Zoo Interchange reconstruction project, centered on the Greenfield Avenue overpass, which will be demolished and rebuilt, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced. Lane and ramp closings began Wednesday morning and are not limited to the immediate area of Greenfield Avenue. For instance, as noted below, the southbound ramp onto I-894 from eastbound I-94 is closed on Wednesday; the ramp from westbound I-94 onto I-894 south will be closed Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, I-894 will be completely closed from the Zoo Interchange south to National Avenue. Actual demolition of the overpass is scheduled for this weekend. Mayfair Lane Closings Begin First Major Phase of Zoo Interchange Work

Closures this week at Watertown Plank Road and south for utility work are percursor to full reconstruction planned to begin in March, DOT says.

If you think you've seen a lot of detours and closings already, get set. You're about to get the first taste of the real deal – six years, or perhaps eight or nine, of the eye-popping Zoo Interchange Reconstruction Project. In preparation for major reconstruction that will begin in March and continue through next summer, a stretch of Mayfair Road will go down to one lane in each direction for part of the coming week, with more lane closures to follow, a Wisconsin Department of Transportation official says.
