State Supreme Court Justice Pat Roggensack defeated challenger Ed Fallone Tuesday in her bid for a second 10-year term on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Schools Tony Evers withstood a challenge from Republican state Rep. Don Pridemore in the only other contested statewide race on the ballot. Roggensack was declared the winner by the Associated Press shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday. As of midnight, with 88 percent of the statewide vote counted, she had 57 percent of the vote to Fallone's 42 percent, according to election results from WISN 12 News. State Superintendent of School Tony Evers will face state Rep. Don Pridemore (R-Hartford) in his bid for re-election in the April 2 election. Both candidates in the nonpartisan race say they're focused on improving the quality of education in Wisconsin, but they differ on the best way to accomplish that goal. Evers, a Plymouth native, has been the state superintendent of schools since 2009. He has been in the education field for more than 30 years, working as a teacher, principal, superintendent, regional administrator and deputy state superintendent before being elected to his current post. Five GOP candidates are vying for the chance to represent the 98th Assembly District in the state Legislature.
Five Republican candidates are running for the vacant seat in the 98th Assembly District in a special primary election on Feb. 19. The winner will advance to the general election on April 2, however, since there is no Democratic candidate, that person is all but certain to win the seat. The district includes Pewaukee, Sussex and portions of Waukesha. The candidates are Ed Baumann, Todd Greenwald, Matt Morzy, Adam Neylon and Jeanne Tarantino (Click on link for biographical information on each candidate). The road to Tuesday’s election has been a long partisan battle as voters will pick either Mitt Romney or Barack Obama for president. But for some in the Sussex and Waukesha area, one race will be between two Republican candidates. State reps. Paul Farrow and Chris Kapenga are running for the 33rd Senate District seat that was vacated earlier this year by former Sen. Rich Zipperer. Zipperer was appointed as the deputy chief of staff and senior counsel for Gov. Scott Walker in July. A longtime school librarian from Muskego is challenging the Republican incumbent in the 83rd State Assembly District. Jim Brownlow, now retired, was a librarian in the Muskego-Norway School District for decades and is now a volunteer tax preparer. He is the Democrat in the race. The incumbent, Dave Craig, is a former congressional aide to Paul Ryan and Village of Big Bend trustee. He was elected to the state Assembly in 2011 in a special election. Craig defeated Brownlow in that race. The 83rd District seat has new boundaries this year in the wake of redistricting prompted by population shifts in the 2010 census. Republican incumbent Paul Farrow and his opponent Democrat Eric Prudent both believe that education is the fundamental engine that drives economic growth in the state. Farrow said that he would like to create a streamlined process in which students can obtain certification and associate degrees at state technical colleges in order to stem the shortage of skilled workers in the future.
