An employee of Golden Guernsey dairy has filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development over the Waukesha plant's abrupt closing over the weekend. Workers were surprised Saturday when they learned they no longer had jobs. With 112 employees, Golden Guernsey workers told Waukesha Patch they had no warning that they would be out of work. Robert Storm left work at 8 p.m. Friday, according to the complaint. He received a phone call from co-workers on Saturday saying they were told to pack up and go home. “I showed up for work on Jan. 7, gates were locked,” Storm wrote. Westwood Aluminum Castings terminating all its employees.
Eighty-seven people are losing their jobs by Friday when Westwood Aluminum Castings in Waukesha terminates all of its employees, according to a notice filed with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. “(The) DWD will work with its regional partner, the Waukesha-Ozaukee-Washington (WOW) Workforce Development Board, to provide Rapid Response service,” states an e-mail from John Dipko, communications director for the DWD. Westwood Aluminum Castings employed 71 people full time who have been with the company for more than six months, 12 people full time who have been working for the company less than six months, three people part time and one manager, according to the notice. The city's unemployment ranking is close to the middle of the state's 31 municipalities with populations over 25,000.
With an unemployment rate of 9.5 percent, Waukesha had the 19th worst rate out of the state's 31 municipalities with population of 25,000 or more. The local unemployment rate worsened from May to June, increasing from 8.7 percent in May to June's 9.5 percent, according to information released by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. One year ago, the rate in Waukesha was 9.8 percent. Waukesha County had one of the better unemployment rates in the state, ranking in the lowest quarter of the state's counties. The county rate was 7.3 percent in June and 6.7 percent in May. One year ago, Waukesha County's rate was 7.7 percent.
