No injuries were reported after a Friday night fire at a seven-story condominium building on West Avenue. Waukesha firefighters responded about 5:40 p.m. Friday to 315 N. West Avenue, where they found heavy smoke on the second floor due to a fire in one of the units. A press release from the department indicated that the fire was quickly brought under control and kept it from spreading to other units. Smoke damage was limited to the second and third floors. Damages were estimated at $100,000 and the fire remains under investigation.

There aren't any concerns about the inspection program in Waukesha, but some area fire chiefs would like to see the process improved.
Ten years ago, the lives of an ambulance crew in central Wisconsin were changed forever when a balding tire caused their vehicle to lose traction on a wet highway, skid across the median and roll over. In the resulting accident, the patient being transported died and the crew was injured, none more so than Matt Deicher of Mosinee. “I flew and hit my face onto the back doors of the ambulance,” Deicher told WISN 12 News. Deicher was paralyzed. He believes the July 2003 accident could have been prevented "very, very easily." Waukesha police investigating car accident after woman hits tree on East Main Street on Saturday.
A 30-year-old Waukesha woman and her two children are facing life-threatening injuries after the woman's vehicle crashed into a tree at 726 E. Main St. at 10:26 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from Sgt. Jerry Habanek. Flight For Life transported one child to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin by helicopter. The other child was transported to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin by ambulance and the mother was sent to Froedtert Hospital via ambulance. The Waukesha Fire Department provided medical treatment at the scene, according to Habanek. A Waukesha police accident reconstruction specialist and detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division were called in to investigate the crash scene. The investigation is ongoing. Follow us…

Police and Fire Commission hires an internal candidate to be the next fire chief in Waukesha.
The new chief of the Waukesha Fire Department is Jesse Alba, who is assistant chief at the Waukesha Fire Department. Fire Chief Allen LaConte announced his retirement from the Waukesha Fire Department in November 2011 after working for the city for 34 years. His last day was celebrated at the department in early March 2012. Alba was among four finalists selected by the Waukesha Police and Fire Commission. Alba started with the Waukesha Fire Department in July 1986. Alba was selected out of 49 applicants for the fire chief position, PFC Chairwoman Cheryl Gemignani said while making the selection. “It was not an easy decision,” she said. “We as a commission take that very seriously." Two internal candidates are among four finalists to be the next fire chief in Waukesha.
The newest Waukesha fire chief could be selected on Thursday, according to the Police and Fire Commission’s agenda. The PFC will meet at 5 p.m. to evaluate the finalists for the fire chief’s position and to deliberate on the selection in closed session. The PFC is scheduled to take final action in open session. There are a total of four finalists, including two internal candidates. Waukesha Battalion Chief Joe Hoffman and Waukesha Assistant Fire Chief Jesse Alba have advanced to the final round, as well as Matthew Haerter and David Litton. Haerter is a battalion chief for the Kenosha Fire Department and Litton serves as fire chief for Bolingbrook, IL. The fire on Sherryl and North Grandview Boulevard has been put out.
A police officer who was on a traffic stop on Summit Avenue early Monday afternoon heard a noise while on a traffic stop, looked up and saw smoke, according to Battalion Chief Joe Hoffman. "He called it in," Hoffman said. The shed was destroyed in the fire at Sherryl Lane and North Grandview Boulevard. The garage was also damaged in the fire, although the fire was stopped before it could spread too far into the garage. No injuries were reported during the fire, which caused $5,000 in damage. The fire remains under investigation. The original call was received at 2:01 p.m. with fire crews being dispatched at 2:03 p.m. An ambulance was the first on scene at 2:05 p.m.

Waukesha police and fire battled out the ultimate rematch during Friday's third annual Police and Fire Basketball Challenge.
The Waukesha Police Department is now 2-1 in the basketball matchups against the Waukesha Fire Department. The Waukesha police officers – with Police Chief Russell Jack making his debut – defeated the Waukesha firefighters 62-60 in the third annual Police and Fire Basketball Challenge. Proceeds from the event were donated to the Waukesha Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, Camp Timberlee's burn victim camp and the Special Olympics of Wisconsin.

The third annual police and firefighter basketball challenge is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Catholic Memorial High School. The Waukesha Police Department won in 2011 and the Waukesha Fire Department took home the glory in 2012. Friday's game will be for pride, bragging rights and for a good cause. Proceeds from the event benefit the Special Olympics of Wisconsin, Camp Timberlee's burn victim camp and the Waukesha Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. There were no injuries in the overnight fire, but the home was destroyed.
No injuries were reported in an overnight fire in the Town of Vernon that “substantially damaged” a home there. According to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, crews responded to a home in the S7600 block of Mount Everest Road at 11:29 p.m. Wednesday. Four occupants of the house there noticed a fire in the attached garage, called 911 and evacuated. WISN 12 News reported that at least 11 departments responded, including Waukesha, New Berlin, Elm Grove and Mukwonago. The release stated that the house “became fully engulfed” and several vehicles and a boat were damaged along with the house. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

If there is smoke coming from the cemetery between now and June 1, it's part of a required prairie burn.
You might see flames coming from the Prairie Home Cemetery’s prairie area that is home to the natural burial area between now and June 1. But the fire is supposed to be there. Prairie burns are required every three to five years, according to a news release from Cemetery Director David Brenner. The Waukesha Fire Department plans to be on site when Midwest Prairie from Janesville completes a controlled burn on the prairie. “This natural habitat has environmental advantages, such as not requiring weekly mowing and does not require regular and costly herbicide applications,” Brenner said in the release. “Additionally, there is the advantage of a beautiful habitat that is attracting much wildlife such as birds and butterflies.”
