Vrakas Seeks Funds to Study, Upgrade Elections Equipment

Capital funding would "increase efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of vote reporting," Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas says.

Waukesha County should budget funds next year to study and potentially upgrade its election equipment, Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas said Tuesday. Vrakas included $70,000 in the capital budget he plans to introduce Friday, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report. Vrakas said in a press release that he wants to study ways to better automate election results and avoid manual counting by municipalities. "Waukesha County is a rapidly growing County and in recent years the number of reporting units in the County has increased," Vrakas said. "This, coupled with the collecting, tallying and reporting vote totals, have made the process cumbersome. The goal is to automate and streamline the system as much as possible to prevent …

Nickolaus Won't Post Election Results on Waukesha County's Website

Embattled clerk says she will not bring back the procedure because the state doesn't recommend it, even as county supervisors are question if it would have prevented the Supreme Court race controversy.

Even though she forgot to save and to post election results for one community that flipped the outcome of the Wisconsin Supreme Court Race in April, Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus said Monday she still won't publish election-night results from individual municipalities on the county's website. Nickolaus said she won't post the results because it isn’t required by the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board. She had posted the results for individual municipalities in the past, but when pressed by Waukesha County Board supervisors Monday to bring the practice back, she said it’s not something she’s interested in doing. Nickolaus did change reporting results since the April election to include wards broken down by community but those…

Waukesha County Clerk's Latest Snafu Nearly a $1 Million Mistake

Embattled Clerk Nickolaus in hot water again after her office loses crucial letter.

Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus – already under investigation for a snafu in reporting votes in the state Supreme Court election  – is coming under fire from county leaders again after an error made by her staff nearly cost the county $1 million. The latest controversy surrounds a crucial letter that Waste Management Inc. sent to Nickolaus’ office in May regarding the expansion of a landfill the company operates in Menomonee Falls. The letter notifying the county of the expansion should have prompted the County Board to take action to join a local committee that will have oversight over the expansion. By joining the committee, the county also will receive $1 million from Waste Management over the next decade. However, that May 9 …
