Shoplifters all around Milwaukee - and the country - are pushing the limits to get their hands on expensive canisters that are often being resold by other business owners.
Thefts of baby formula have been occurring, well, as long as baby formula has been sold in stores. But a rash of recent thefts in the Milwaukee area and even across the country, appear to have escalated in terms of the boldness and brazenness — or maybe desperation — of the offenders. The most recent large-scale bust happened in April when police say Ebony Sims, 26, and Johnetta Webb, 23, both from Milwaukee, loaded 69 cans of formula into plastic totes they had grabbed off the shelves at Walmart in Greenfield and waltzed out of the store. A West Allis mother and daughter are accused of trying to steal $2,100 in merchandise from Target in Waukesha. Police say one woman admitted to similar thefts in Oak Creek, Greenfield and West Milwaukee, according to a criminal complaint.

A West Allis mother may want look for different activities to do with her daughter after Waukesha police say they tried to steal more than $2,000 in merchandise from Target. Linda K. Hartleben, 56, and Larayne F. Hartleben, 20, were charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Wednesday with one count of felony retail theft. If convicted, they each face up to 1 ½ years in prison and $10,000 in fines. While we all might want to flush away our problems, one Sussex woman is learning the hard way you can’t flush those problems away in a literal sense. Jaye M. Snake, 57, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday after she and an alleged male accomplice stole items from Menard’s in Waukesha, then tried to flush the items down the toilet to avoid arrest. According to the criminal complaint: On Aug. 16, a Menard’s security officer spotted Snake and the man enter the store with a pink backpack, then begin placing items in a shopping cart and on the backpack. A 35-year-old Waukesha man is facing charges alleging he stole a bike from an area store, then returned it later the same day after he was upset with its performance. Addison S. Graikowski was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday with one count of retail theft. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: On June 27, Graikowski walked into Target not wearing a shirt and was immediately asked by a security officer to put one a shirt in order to shop at the store. Waukesha woman is arrested for stealing from a West Allis store, but tells police she doesn't recall the incident because she had been drinking heavily that day, according to a criminal complaint.
A 27-year-old Waukesha woman is facing charges after she allegedly stole nearly $1,100 worth of DVDs from a West Allis department store, but was so drunk at the time she didn’t remember taking the items, according to a criminal complaint. Natalie Marie Zieroth was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Saturday with one count of retail theft. If convicted, she could face up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines. A 37-year-old New Berlin man is facing charges after he tried stealing from Menard’s in Waukesha despite having plenty of money to buy the items. Dennis O. Beard was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday with one count of retail theft. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: On March 28, Waukesha police officers were called to Menard’s after an employee spotted Beard changing the price on an item in order to save $68 while checking out.
