School governance board relieved, hopeful about next year.
Applause from the audience celebrated the Waukesha School Board’s unanimous approval Wedneday night of the charter contract for Project Change, a school for high school students battling drug and alcohol addiction. For months, district staff and community members had been working to save the small school, addressing concerns raised by the School Board about the cost of the program given the small number of students enrolled. The school’s charter contract with the school district was set to expire this month and until a contract was approved by the board, the fate of the small, specialized school was uncertain. “I think everyone believed that this was needed, but ‘should it be a charter school?’ was one of the questions,” School Board …

Charter school program to come before finance committee, school board this week.
With a newly-revised charter, plan of operation and budget, Project Change Recovery School is seeking approval to continue serving high school students battling drug and alcohol addiction. The school’s charter contract with the School District of Waukesha expires this month and until a new or revised contract is approved by the Waukesha School Board, the fate of the small, specialized school is uncertain. At last Tuesday night’s school board curriculum and instruction meeting, Jennifer Wimmer, executive director of special education for the school district, and a group of advocates updated the committee on their progress over the last month to ensure the school continues. To answer concerns raised by the school board at a previous meeting…

Waukesha School District remains committed to recovery program for students, despite potential non-renewal of charter contract.
A popular but low-enrollment charter school in the district is getting a closer look, with a possible end result of the program serving more students. Project Change Charter Recovery School is a charter school in the Waukesha School District for high school students returning to school after treatment for drug or alcohol addiction. The charter agreement for the school is up for renewal and, with the school board scrutinizing the cost of the program versus the number of students served, questions were raised about continuing the school. However, following an outpouring of public support at a recent School Board meeting, the district is looking at ways to serve more students and to do so in a “fiscally-responsible manner,” according to …

Waukesha School Board asked in January for more information about programs that would replace Project Change before pulling the plug on the charter school.
Update, 11:20 a.m. Tuesday: The agenda for the Curriculum and Instruction Committee no longer has discussion or action about Project Change's closure. The agenda was revised Tuesday morning. Original: When the Waukesha School Board in January first heard that Project Change, a charter school serving area teens facing alcohol and drug addictions, was being eyed by school administration for closure, it didn’t sit well with some board members. “We have a need for it. We are going to continue to have a need for it,” said School Board Member Barb Brzenk during the January board meeting. “It is a reality in our community and in communities everywhere across the country.” The board put the closure of the charter school on hold for now, but it …

Waukesha School Board doesn't pull the charter school in favor of a program, but the issue will return.
A charter school serving students who are trying to get clean from alcohol and other drugs was spared from the chopping block for now as the Waukesha School Board wanted specifics about a program that would replace the school. About a dozen people pleaded with the Waukesha School Board on Wednesday to keep the charter school status for Project Change and Recovery School, a charter school that serves students fighting alcohol and drug addictions. Three parents spoke during the meeting, sharing stories about how their children had low grades, drug addictions and thoughts of suicide. One woman shared how her son went from a 1.5 grade point average to a 3.0 grade point average before enrolling at the charter school. Her son had struggled with …
