U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, former running mate of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, says that with the election behind him, he's happy to "get back to work" and fight for what he believes in.
Despite taking his lumps in the November election, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan said Tuesday that he has a "moral obligation" to continue fighting for what he believes in. "What do you do when you get knocked down?" he asked "You get back up. You pick yourself up, and go back and fight for what you think is right, what you believe in." Speaking at a town hall meeting in Oak Creek, the former Republican vice presidential candidate joked about the outcome of the race. "Let's just say the election didn't go the way I wanted it to go," he told the crowd of about 180. In his first live television interview since the November election, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan Sunday blasted President Barack Obama for his handling of the economy and said the nation would be in better financial shape if Hillary Clinton were president. Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," the former Republican vice presidential candidate said "we would have fixed this fiscal mess by now" if Clinton had been president, The Huffington Post reported. None of the U.S. elected officials from Wisconsin particularly cared for the deal hammered out to avoid the "fiscal cliff" — and that includes those who voted for it.
The "fiscal cliff" was averted Tuesday when the U.S. House handily passed a bill approved a day earlier in the U.S. Senate that raised taxes on the wealthy and staved off a tax increase for the middle-class. The bill passed 257-167 in the House, a comfortable 40 votes more than what was needed to become law. Among the congressmen serving southeastern Wisconsin, U.S. Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI 5th District) and Tom Petri (R-WI 6th District) voted "no" on the measure, while U.S. Reps. Paul Ryan (R- WI 1st District) and Gwen Moore (D- WI 4th District) cast "yes" votes. U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI 7th District), who now serves the Hudson area, voted no. Waukesha's been no stranger to politicians the past few months, and is apparently gotten the attention of former Gov. Mitt Romney.
Waukesha certainly has seen a lot of politicians in recent days. Jill Biden’s visited the city that has a strong majority of Republican voters to campaign for her husband, Vice President Joe Biden. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, has been here twice since being selected as a running mate for Mitt Romney. And Romney’s started mentioning the city in his speeches.
