City of Pewaukee Alderwoman Kathleen Novack will be the new clerk of Waukesha County. Novack, 62, won 71 percent of the vote, or 155,430 votes, in Tuesday's county clerk race, beating Town of Lisbon business owner Jessie Read, 52, who collected 63,575 votes, or 29 percent of the vote. County Clerk Candidates Vow to Restoring Public Faith in the Office

A City of Pewaukee alderman and Town of Lisbon small business owner square off in Tuesday's election to replace embattled Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus.

With an office mired in controversy the past several years, two candidates are seeking to replace outgoing Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus in Tuesday's election. Town of Lisbon Democrat Jessie Read will face off against Republican candidate City of Pewaukee Alderwoman Kathleen Novack to replace Nickolaus. Although they come from different backgrounds, both hold a common theme of restoring integrity to the office if they're re-elected. Read, 52, owns JRR Bookkeeping and said her business skills and experience would make her a strong  candidate to become the new county clerk and serve the public. "I'm promoting the idea that No. 1, I'm going to bring honesty and integrity into the office," she said. "I believe its been lacking lately …

Dems Feel Left Out of County Election Equipment Discussion

County Executive Dan Vrakas consulted with Kathleen Novack, who is the Republican in the clerk's race in November, which has Democrats crying foul.

A state Democratic party official is asking the Waukesha County Chairman to explain why he consulted with the GOP County Clerk candidate, but not the Democrat, when proposing to purchase new election equipment. JSOnline.com reported that County Chairman Dan Vrakas had included a $70,000 capital expenditure in the 2013 budget after discussing it with Kathleen Novack, the Republican nominee for county clerk, according to Vrakas chief of staff Shawn Lundie. Democrat Jessie Read, her opponent in the November general election, was not similarly contacted, however, JSOnline.com reported. A letter sent to Lundie from Jeff Christensen, Decmocratic chairman of Wisconsin's 5th Congressional District, explained that he was "strongly disappointed" …

Vrakas Seeks Funds to Study, Upgrade Elections Equipment

Capital funding would "increase efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of vote reporting," Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas says.

Waukesha County should budget funds next year to study and potentially upgrade its election equipment, Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas said Tuesday. Vrakas included $70,000 in the capital budget he plans to introduce Friday, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report. Vrakas said in a press release that he wants to study ways to better automate election results and avoid manual counting by municipalities. "Waukesha County is a rapidly growing County and in recent years the number of reporting units in the County has increased," Vrakas said. "This, coupled with the collecting, tallying and reporting vote totals, have made the process cumbersome. The goal is to automate and streamline the system as much as possible to prevent …

Recall Election Ballots Safe Despite Rumors of Destruction

Online blogs accused Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus of planning to destroy ballots from the recall showdown between Gov. Scott Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

Political blogers are accusing Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus of threatening to destroy recall ballots from the June election after open records requests were made to review the ballots. However, the ballots will not be destroyed at this time, according to Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel. “Of course, I have an interest in attempting to avoid Public Records Law violations, especially when destruction of the records in question is imminent,” Schimel said in an email to an attorney asking about the situation. “I think this interest is especially significant when the records in question relate to public confidence in our elections.  “Thus, after becoming aware of these issues, I inquired and have been advised that the …

Primary Election Preview: Waukesha County Clerk

Tuesday's primary election is among three area candidates – Kathleen Novack, Kathleen Karalewitz and Gina Kozlik – who look to be Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus' successor.

The three candidates running for the Waukesha County clerk’s post on the Republican ticket all want to see election night result reporting improved while restoring public trust and confidence in the office. Election night snafus are well documented in the clerk’s office. Under intense scrutiny, Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus decided she was no longer running for the seat. Meanwhile, costs to fix election-related problems in the office are exceeding $250,000. Delayed unofficial vote reporting is among problems. But the biggest problem was in the April 2011 State Supreme court election when Nickolaus mistakenly left out tallies from the entire city of Brookfield in unofficial results reporting to the Associated Press on election night…

Waukesha County clerk's office makes it through Tuesday's primary election without any major snags.

Results in the recall elections came in a timely fashion Tuesday with results being tallied by 10:34 p.m.  Nickolaus first garnered national attention on the April 2011 elections when she forgot to press save on results a Wisconsin Supreme Court race, which ended up switching the results in one of the most contentious elections in state history. Waukesha County Clerk Nickolaus Won't Run Again

Embattled official tells Waukesha Freeman "it's time to close the door on this chapter of my life."

After gaining national attention - and plenty of cricticism - for a series of election snafus, Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus has decided not to seek re-election this fall. Nickolaus told the Waukesha Freeman she would step down on Dec. 31 and said she wanted to see the electorate focus on getting other Republican candidates elected to office in November. "It's time to close the door on this chapter of my life," Nickolaus she told the newspaper Friday. "So much has been focused on me, but now it's important that positive energy is spent on the re-election of Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, and Sen. Scott Fitzgerald." Nickolaus' decision comes less than a month after her office came under fire for lengthy delays …

'Sha Guy, im not saying, and I don't think she is saying she IS a non-partisan person, by running as a Democrat he is obviously partisan, but from talking with her, he feels that the position has nothing to do with partisan politics and would run the office as so.
