A stray miniature donkey that was staying at the Humane Animal Welfare Society was reunited with its owner, according to a news release from the Waukesha-based animal shelter. The efforts to reunite the donkey with its owner involved “a lengthy door-to-door search and great community involvement to spread the word about the animal’s plight,” the news release states. “The owner came forward on Saturday and we were able to get them reunited rather quickly that day,” said HAWS Executive Director Lynn Olenik in the release. The miniature donkey was found around noon Wednesday, wandering on Highway 59 in the Town of Genesee. The owner was unaware the donkey had gone missing because the donkey resides at a different location than the owner. …

So just how does one lose an animal as large as a donkey? That is what the Humane Animal Welfare Society is trying to figure out. The animal shelter is now home to a stray donkey that was found wandering in the Town of Genesee around noon Wednesday. HAWS, the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County, has partnered with the Blood Center of Wisconsin for a life-saving (human) blood drive from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the shelter at 701 Northview Road, Waukesha. “This blood drive for humans honors this giving season, and also allows HAWS the chance to show support for the community that has been so supportive of us,” said HAWS’ Executive Director Lynn Olenik. “We invite the public to join in the giving spirit and donate – you never know when you could give the gift of life to another pet owner or animal lover.” As an added bonus, those who are giving can also receive. Waukesha firefighters extinguish blaze at 1515 Cherrywood Drive.
Despite the best efforts of the Waukesha Fire Department, three dogs were killed in a house fire on Saturday at 1515 Cherrywood Drive. The fire, which broke out between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., started on top of a computer desk where multiple plugs were using electricity. The exact cause remains under investigation. When firefighters arrived, the home’s resident told them that there were three dogs inside the house, according to Battalion Chief Steve Ore. The firefighters’ first priority was to quickly extinguished the fire, Ore said, and then find the pets. Crystal is aggressive with other dogs, so the pit bull has to be adopted into a puppy-less home. With nearly 60 pets residing in the Humane Animal Welfare Society’s small animal ward, the animal shelter is holding a special adoption event from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. The Gerbil Jamboree and Hamster Hoe Down highlights the animals available for adoption and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions from potential adopters. It's great that they are posting the lost donkey! Now they need to start posting their lost aka stray dogs! That is something every shelter should be doing! So I would challenge HAWS to show the same concern for the dogs and cats at the shelter that they are affording this Donkey!   more ›
