Waukesha Native Becomes First U.S. Woman to Win a World Triathlon Series Event

Olympian Gwen Jorgensen competed at the Omegawave World Triathlon San Diego in Mission Beach over the weekend where she snatched first place.

A Waukesha native has become the first U.S. woman to win a World Triathlon Series race on Friday. Olympian Gwen Jorgensen snatched the lead in the last mile of the triathlon and won the Omegawave World Triathlon San Diego in Mission Beach, reported the Journal Sentinel.  Jorgensen, a standout swimmer at Waukesha South High School, was recruited to run triathlons when she was studying at University of Wisconsin-Madison. The 26-year-old woman was an accountant at Ernest and Young in Milwaukee when she made the USA Olympic team. She came in 38th place in the London Olympics after she got flat tire during the bike leg.  Jorgensen finished the triathlon with a race-best run split of 33:10, reported the Journal Sentinel.

UPDATED: Tuskegee Airman Honored by Hometown High School

Second Lt. Alfred M. Gorham, Dr. Conrad Andringa and Olympian Gwen Jorgensen were inducted into the Waukesha South High School Wall of Fame on Friday.

Editor's Note: This article was updated at 9:15 p.m. Monday with more information about Dr. Conrad Andringa. Second Lt. Alfred M. Gorham, the only pilot from Wisconsin to fly with the Tuskegee Airmen, struggled to fit in. Gorham was a member of the group of black World War II pilots who were known for their skilled fighting during the war despite facing segregation and prejudice. “He faced a continued battle of segregation, mistrust and outright hate,” said David Isabell, a Waukesha resident who researched Gorham. “He was from Wisconsin, from Waukesha, a small, little dinky town. … The Northern blacks didn’t like him because he was a small, country bumpkin. The Southern blacks didn’t like him because he was a Northern black, and the whites…

An Olympian Comes Home: Gwen Jorgensen Shares Memories of London 2012

Jorgensen, a Waukesha South High School graduate, makes first trip back to Waukesha since competing in the London 2012 Olympics and is keynote speaker at Carroll University's opening convocation.

As a young girl, Gwen Jorgensen was happiest in the water — whether it was swimming lessons, grandma’s pool or an unheated pool at Waukesha South High School. But a bike? The only way her parents could get her to ride with them was to bribe her with ice cream at the end of a ride. So her reaction when first approached about competing for the USA Triathlon team? “I said, ‘No thanks, I am not interested, I hate biking,’” Jorgensen, 26, told hundreds of Carroll University students Wednesday afternoon at the college's opening convocation. But Jorgensen got on that bike, she trained hard and sacrificed her time with friends to compete in the London 2012 Olympics. She started the swim out strong and was in medal contention as she jumped on the …

Gorham, Class of 1938, and Gwen Jorgensen, Class of 2004, will be honored at a ceremony in the auditorium at Waukesha South at 2 p.m. Sept. 7, according to athletics director Dan Domach. Greetings...I'm a Tuskegee Airmen historian...While reading your article, I noted that you called documented original Tuskegee Airman (DOTA) Alfred M. Gorham the ONLY Tuskegee Airman from Wisconsin. That is NOT true. Gorham is the only Tuskegee Airman pilot from Wisconsin, but not the only Tuskegee Airman from Wisconsin. I have records on all of the Tuskegee Airmen pilots, which contains their …   more ›

South High Grad Gwen Jorgensen Defeated by Flat Tire

London 2012 Olympics comes to an end for local triathlete who placed 38th after suffering a flat tire.

Waukesha South High School graduate Gwen Jorgensen placed 38th in the triathlon in London 2012 Olympics Saturday morning – a flat tire lead to the disappointing outcome. "You don't get to come to the Olympics every year," Jorgensen told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I just wanted to finish and know that I gave it my all. I just wanted to put it all out there." The 26-year-old accountant at Ernst & Young in Milwaukee was competing in the Olympics this year for the first time. Her time of two hours, six minutes and 34 seconds was not enough to fight against Nicola Spirig, the athlete from Switzerland who took the gold. “Not my day yesterday,” Jorgensen wrote on her Twitter account. Wish I could do…

Olympics Viewing Guide

Here's a look at the top events from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and when to tune in.

The 2012 Summer Olympics in London formally get started with opening ceremonies on Friday. Most events will be broadcast live on television or online, and NBCOlympics.com has a fairly helpful TV schedule. London2012.com is also helpful in finding what events are taking place when. (Remember, London is six hours ahead of Waukesha, so adjust accordingly.) One Waukesha star will be competing during the worldwide event. Gwen Jorgensen, a Waukesha South graduate and accountant, will be running, biking and swimming in the triathlon. Because of the time change, NBC’s prime time coverage will be largely repackaged coverage from the earlier in the day. (With Bob Costas!) But NBC’s cable networks and website will have live coverage. Opening …
