Will the Giant Cow Stay in Waukesha?

Lifeway Foods, which just purchased the Golden Guernsey dairy on Delafield Street, has plans for the Waukesha icon.

What’s happening to the giant cow? It’s the one question we’ve heard over and over again after Golden Guernsey suddenly shut down with no warning, leaving more than 100 employees without a job. OpenGate Capital, which owned the dairy, filed for bankruptcy days later. Lifeway Foods Inc., of Morton Grove, IL., bought the company for $7.4 million on Tuesday. CEO Julie Smolyansky told WISN 12 News the company has been needing more capacity and space than its already-cramped headquarters in Morton Grove. She is hoping to double capacity with the purchase of the Waukesha plant that is planned to reopen in the summer. Lifeway Foods, producer of frozen kefir and probiotic cheese products, might bring back the Golden Guernsey brand of milk but …

Pay raise? Hopefully if they want to make a profit they will hire people at less wages. Overpaying people is how this all happened in the first place. Lower paying jobs are better then no jobs. Its not "hard" work.   more ›

Schools Switch Milk Providers in Wake of Golden Guernsey Shutdown

Thirteen school districts in southeastern Wisconsin will use Prairie Farms Dairy next school year.

After Golden Guernsey shutdown in January, school districts had to make adjustments at the last minute to ensure the kids had milk at school.  Now, a coalition of 13 area school districts, including Elmbrook School District, will receive milk from Prairie Farms Dairy, the schools announced Wednesday. The decision was made based on several criteria, including a blind-taste test, price, service, package appearance and offerings of a variety of flavors, package sizes and formulations, according to a news release from the Southeast Wisconsin School Nutrition Cooperative. Milk consumption decreased by more than 5,000 cartons in Menomonee Falls School District from January 2012 to 2013. The students complained about taste, and preferred juice …

So they're dropping the milk company after the patriot who owned it stripped the assets and purposely tanked it to profit? For shame! Waukesha, teaching kids such practices is immoral is teaching Marx to these impressionable young minds! I for one plan to start a writing campaign to stop them from practicing such anti-capitalist trends!   more ›

Golden Guernsey Creditors Support Sale If They Can Recover Claims

The two creditors are supporting the proposed $5.5 million sale of Golden Guernsey Dairy if it means they recover their claims from the proceeds of the sale.

Superior Dairy in Canton, OH, has made a $5.5 million offer to purchase Golden Guernsey in Waukesha. The offer for purchase could make way for Golden Guernsey to re-open after a California investment firm owning the Wisconsin dairy filed bankruptcy in early January.  Accord Financial was owed about $7.9 million and Foremost Farms USA was owed about $1.8 million at the time of the bankruptcy petition, according to the Business Journal article.  Golden Guernsey started in 1930 as a farmer-owned cooperative in Milwaukee, and by 1935, delivered milk to the homes of 20,000 customers in Wisconsin, …

Leftover Golden Guernsey Milk Donated to Hunger Task Force

While dairy has filed for bankruptcy, the milk will go to the area's needy.

More than eight truckloads of milk left in the Golden Guernsey plant after the dairy closed abruptly will be donated to the Hunger Task Force, according to WISN (Channel 12). Some of the 111 workers who lost their jobs when the plant shut down with no warning Jan. 5 had mentioned the dairy still had milk product going to waste in the milk processing facility.  “It’s really great to be able to make a call and let a pantry know they’ll have real milk to give a family or to a meal program telling them they can serve fresh milk with supper," said Sherrie Tussler, executive director for the Hunger Task Force. "With all of this dairy we are going to be able to reach out to communities all over the state and offer them something they don’t see …
