A Waukesha man whose sexual assault charge led to a partial shutdown of a dating website was convicted Tuesday of several charges, including possession of child pornography. Daniel R. Schmidt, 21, is still scheduled for a February jury trial in Milwaukee County after he was charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old Muskego boy he met on Skout.com, a mobile flirting website. The case has drawn national media attention and prompted Skout’s CEO to shut down a mobile app to the website and temporarily shut down the under-18 portion of the site. A 21-year-old Waukesha man whose sexual assault charge prompted a partial shutdown of a social networking site faces an additional 16 felonies in Waukesha County. The one-time volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sister, a child mentorship program, is facing serious allegations of delivering drugs, sexual assault and child pornography in Waukesha and Milwaukee counties. Waukesha man will proceed to trial after picking up 13-year-old Muskego boy and performing sexual acts with him in the park in a case that has caused a social networking website to partially suspend operations.
A Waukesha man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old Muskego boy he met on a dating web site will proceed to trial. Daniel R. Schmidt, 21, waived his preliminary hearing Friday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on one count of second-degree sexual assault of a child. Schmidt, who is free on $5,000 bail, went past reporters before and after the hearing without answering questions, but his attorney, Jonathan LaVoy, said he hopes to work out a resolution with prosecutors as the case proceeds. LaVoy said it has been a difficult time for Schmidt, but he has a very strong family to support him. “He’s troubled,” LaVoy said. “He’s a young man with some issues.” According to the criminal complaint, Schmidt met the victim on a website …
