Wildlife in Need Center is reminding people to not litter to help protect animals, and prevent another incident like this skunk found itself in.
Wildlife in Need Center animal care manager Mandy Feavel was on her way to work Tuesday morning when she saw a scared skunk with its head trapped inside a discarded Culver’s ice cream container on Highway 18. Hoping the skunk would escape safely, she enlisted the help of some brave people – wildlife rehabilitator Jaci Schmitz and volunteer Ben Johnson – to help free the animal. “Luckily the skunk had not been hit by a vehicle on Highway 18 but had gone down the bike trail,” states a letter from the Wildlife in Need Center to Waukesha Patch. “Mandy bravely approached the skunk and assessed it for any injuries. Since it appeared uninjured and in good health, she helped hold the custard cup so the skunk could pull its head free.” The skunk …

The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight event planners are moving full steam ahead with announcements of more partnerships and entertainment for its Field of Honor event, set for August 11 in Miller Park. The first big move comes from the Wisconsin-based chain Culver's, who's Milwaukee-area locations are donating money to the Field of Honor event and also sponsored the group's flight on June 2; Stars and Stripes Honor Flight hit 2,000 veterans served on that flight. Waukesha has three Culver's locations: "We are grateful to have the support of Culver's," said Joe Dean, chairman of the board for Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. What started as a photo shoot opportunity for pets has grown into a fair, and organizer says 'the more, the merrier'
Signs have gone up for a Pet Photo Shoot at the Walgreens on Racine Avenue and Janesville Road, but it's just part of the events that will be offered on Saturday, September 17 from 11am -3pm. Chris March, organizer and Head Photo Specialist at Walgreen's wanted to hold a charitable fundraiser, and thought the offer for a free photo with a donation to the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha (HAWS) would be a great cause. HAWS will now also be on site with a mobile adoption trailer, and other Muskego businesses have also committed to helping out. It isn't just people littering, it's the garbage trucks, trash haulers, etc. that don't have the trash contained/covered as they transport it. It blows out and all over as they drive. It amazes me that they even have anything left when they get to the landfill!   more ›
