Special design on bags of heroin and text messages could connect the dots for the prosecution to convict Waukesha's Kevin Cobus of reckless homicide in the deaths of Jamie Hansen and Cody Riggs, but defense takes its turn beginning Thursday.
Specially "branded" packets of heroin could tie a 24-year-old Waukesha man to a Milwaukee dealer and two overdose deaths. However it will be up to a jury to decide if the relationship left him guilty of reckless homicide in those deaths. The trial of Kevin Cobus, who faces up to 80 years in prison for the overdose deaths of Muskego woman Jamie Hansen and Delafield man Cody Riggs in separate incidents, entered its third day on Wednesday. Hansen died in July of 2011 and Riggs died in January of 2012; both were involved with Cobus the day before they died. The state rested its case at the end the day. Persuading the jury to “judge him on his acts,” the state opened its reckless homicide case Monday against Waukesha’s Kevin Cobus. Cobus, 28, faces two counts of first-degree reckless homicide in the drug overdose deaths of Jamie Hansen, 24, of Muskego and Cody Riggs, 26, of Delafield. Investigators say Cobus supplied the fatal dose of drugs to both people. "Everyone knows you can't judge a book by its cover, and while the defendant sits here and doesn't look like someone who would be a heroin user, you must judge him on his acts," said prosecutor Susan Opper during opening arguments in Waukesha County Circuit Court. A Waukesha man who is accused of providing heroin to two Waukesha County residents who overdosed on the drug and died was ordered to stand trial after a lengthy preliminary hearing Thursday morning. Kevin S. Cobus, 27, of Waukesha is charged with two counts of first-degree reckless homicide. He faces up to 80 years in prison and $200,000 in fines if convicted of both felony charges. Cobus – who used heroin on a daily basis at the time of his arrest, according to court documents – appeared in court in custody for the preliminary hearing.
