Class of 2013: Andy Stasik Helps Children Fight Illness

Catholic Memorial High School senior is overcoming his own disability while working to save the lives of other children through his fundraising efforts.

Andy Stasik’s dreams of owning a golf course go beyond the love of the game. For Andy, golf’s been his one and only shot at being a high school athlete. “It is a game that you can play all your life,” Andy said. “With my medical problems, I have been actually able to play golf, unlike other sports. I got really into it.” Andy, a Muskego resident, was about 1 years old when he was diagnosed with severe combined immune deficiency. As a young baby, his upper body muscles were attacked, leaving permanent damage “I lost most of my muscles in my hands,” Andy said. “I can’t open my hands at all.” But he hasn’t let his disability slow him down toward his path to graduation. Andy will receive his diploma at Catholic Memorial High School on Sunday…

DSHA 3rd, Catholic Memorial 4th in National Rugby Championships in Caledonia

Hundreds of rugby players from all over the country came to Caledonia to play in the 2013 National Girls Rugby Championship this weekend, including teams from DSHA, Catholic Memorial, Oak Creek and Tosa/Brookfield.

Twenty-four teams from across the country — including teams from Oak Creek, Brookfield, Waukesha and Milwaukee — played at the Caledonia-Mount Pleasant Park in the 2013 National Girls Rugby Championship this weekend. In Division 1, Divine Savior Holy Angels High School defeated Catholic Memorial of Waukesha 27-12 for third place. They were the only two Wisconsin schools in the competition portion. Oak Creek, the Wauwatosa/Brookfield combined team and Kettle Moraine all played in the Festival Division with the junior varsity team from Armstrong MN. CMH Puts Artistic Talent on Display

What's in the mind of a teenager? Waukesha Catholic Memorial art students explain their view of the world in paint, photography and three dimensions.

The Annual Catholic Memorial Art Show was held on Thursday and Friday, involving more than 200 students' pieces, and more than 1,400 works on display. Art teacher Kathy Hanlon Sampon said the process that leads to the show throughout the school year is one of discovery and pride, both for her and her students. Photography, design, paintings and sculptures were all featured, and take all week to organize and hang in the academic resource center in the school.

No Sirens Allowed: Waukesha Police/Fire Basketball Showdown Set for Friday

The third annual Police and Firefighter Basketball Challenge will begin with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Catholic Memorial High School

The third annual police and firefighter basketball challenge is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Catholic Memorial High School. The Waukesha Police Department won in 2011 and the Waukesha Fire Department took home the glory in 2012. Friday's game will be for pride, bragging rights and for a good cause. Proceeds from the event benefit the Special Olympics of Wisconsin, Camp Timberlee's burn victim camp and the Waukesha Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. Tickets are $5 at the door for adults, $3 for students and children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are $4. Tickets can be purchased at the Waukesha locations of Waukesha State Bank. Catholic Memorial Competes in 2013 Rube Goldberg Competition

Students were charged with building a complex machine to complete a simple task in at least 20 steps.

Waukesha Catholic Memorial was one of 20 Wisconsin high schools that competed Friday in the 2013 Milwaukee Regional Rube Goldberg Machine Contest at Waukesha County Technical College. The competition involves creating complex machines to complete a simple task. This year’s task was to hammer a nail. The contest challenges students to take an elementary task and provide a complicated solution using ordinary objects and mechanical gadgets – in 20 steps or more. Machines are required to be no larger than 6 feet by 6 feet by 6 feet. Janesville Craig was the winner; Waunakee was second and Antigo third. Janesville Craig and Waunakee will advance to the national Rube Goldberg Machine Contest on March 16, also at WCTC.

Bixby, of Waukesha, has advanced as a finalist in the 49th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program competition which was established in 1964 to provide academic recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Bixby was selected from more than 1,600 semifinalists competing for the opportunity to be awarded one of 800 National Achievement Scholarships.
