Jennifer Podhora, 28, of Waukesha, had a tremendous impact on the Elmbrook middle school students she worked with before she passed away from cancer.
Last September, the students in Jennifer Podhora’s classes were thrilled their teacher was back at Wisconsin Hills Middle School. She had started at the Brookfield middle school in September 2011 but her year of teaching was cut short because she needed cancer treatment. She stepped away from the school in spring 2012, focused on her health and was told she was cancer free last summer. “Kids are amazing in that they will always rally around someone in need,” said Principal Robyn Martino. “I think they felt like they were truly instrumental in making her smile. … She definitely made a difference in the kids’ lives.” The victory was short lived. The cancer came back last fall and Podhora again left Wisconsin Hills Middle School. She was …

One week after 24-year-old Waukesha mother was killed, police say by 26-year-old Eddie Callaway, Carroll University held a vigil in her honor.
One by one, friends, students, food service employees and Carroll University staff members came forward talking about Shanel "Nani" Negron's smile and the impact the small things she would do to brighten their day. Negron, 24, was killed April 22 after being shot in the head. The Carroll University food service worker left behind her family, including her 3-year-old daughter Jaslene. One student. was terrified of being bullied like he was in high school when he started at Carroll University. It was a smile from Negron that helped him adjust to a new life. Another student came to Carroll University from California. As a freshman, she was nervous about how to use her student identification in the dining hall. "I just want pizza," the student…

The third annual event was held April 12 at the Saratoga campus of the Waukesha STEM Academy.
Genny Lambert scans the impressively expo-fitted Saratoga School gymnasium, the same way a proud mother would watch her daughters head off to college. It's a brief moment of reflection amidst the chaos of more than 100 excited young girls, dressed in matching light blue shirts, bouncing past the diverse selection of career fair stations that line the walls. It was only three years ago that Lambert, a teacher at the co-ed Saratoga campus of the Waukesha STEM Academy, had the dream of creating an event that would help young girls realize that a career in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field was not reserved only for men. “It all started with my idea — my passion — to make sure that there’s more girls in the STEM …

A Carroll University student started raising money online for the man who was cited for disorderly conduct after a misunderstanding caused a lockdown because he was seen carrying an airsoft gun.
A Carroll University student wants to raise money to pay the fine for the man who caused a campus-wide lockdown after he was walking across campus with an airsoft gun. Emily Kammerud started a fundraising account through gofundme.com to help pay for the $303 fine that comes with the disorderly conduct citation Michael Wiedemann received. Authorities say Wiedemann, 50, found the gun in the trash, took it home and planned to give or sell it to a friend. He apologized for the misunderstanding. "It'll never happen again," he told TMJ4. "It was a dumb mistake on my dumb part and I'll never do it again." As of Thursday afternoon, 19 people have raise $235. Kammerud said on the fundraising website, "This poor guy has been ticketed for a …

A 50-year-old man carrying an airsoft gun through campus prompted a gun scare in Waukesha on Tuesday.
Editor's Note: This article was updated at 7:30 p.m. with more information about Wiedemann's intentions. The 50-year-old man who caused a campus-wide lockdown at Carroll University after he was walking across campus with an airsoft gun that resembles a rifle was cited for disorderly conduct, Capt. Ron Oremus told Patch on Wednesday. The fine for a municipal citation of disorderly conduct is $303, according to Oremus. He will not face criminal charges. Oremus identified the man as Michael Wiedemann. "He said he found the gun in a garbage and was walking back to his apartment," Oremus said in an email. Tactical units from the Waukesha Police Department and Waukesha County Sheriff's Department helped bring one person into custody, although the investigation is ongoing.
A man who police say was walking around the Carroll University campus Tuesday with an airsoft-style gun is in custody following an incident that resulted in 90-minute lockdown at the college and surrounding schools. The lockdown was put into place around 10:30 a.m., after Waukesha received a call from from Carroll security saying that several students reported seeing a man in his 50s or 60s carrying a shotgun or rifle on the northwest side of the campus, police said. By noon, the suspect — a 50-year-old Waukesha man — was located off campus in an apartment building within blocks of the incident, and was taken into custody without incident. The weapon was later located and determined to be an airsoft weapon, which is similar to a BB gun and…
