Gas Station Homicide Defendant's Attempts at Tossing Evidence Fails

Waukesha County Judge Kathryn Foster rules that 21-year-old Billy Ingram was detained appropriately while Brookfield police officers were investigating a nearby home invasion.

The Brookfield police officer who detained 21-year-old Billy Ingram before his arrest on a warrant acted appropriately when he questioned Ingram while investigating a nearby burglary, Waukesha County Judge Kathryn Foster ruled on Tuesday following a three-hour hearing. Ingram is charged with the May 29 homicide of Nayyer Rana, a gas station clerk in Waukesha. Ingram’s attorney, Sam Benedict, was attempting to toss out evidence base on what Benedict felt was an illegal stop. “What is clear is in this court’s review of this record is the field interrogation was conducted by the book,” Foster said. Ingram, who had a warrant out for his arrest, was taken into custody by Brookfield police while they were investigating a May 30 home invasion. He…

Gas Station Homicide Defendant Wants Evidence Kept From Trial

Billy J. Ingram, 21, of Waukesha, claims his arrest violated his constitutional rights.

The 21-year-old Waukesha man accused of gunning down a Petro Mart clerk during a robbery is claiming his arrest and evidence obtained by police during his arrest violates his constitutional rights. Billy J. Ingram, who has been in custody since the day after Nayyer Rana, 56,was found dead May 29 at the gas station on East Broadway, is asking a judge to prohibit prosecutors from presenting evidence found in bags seized by police during his trial, according to a court motion filed last week. Elm Grove police officers located bags that had Rana’s key lanyard and cell phone, as well as information linking the bags to Ingram. Ingram later admitted one of the bags was his when the Brookfield Police Department took him into custody on May 30 for …

5th paragraph should read "Ingram", not Rana I believe. The Elm Grove police had good instincts when they stopped Ingram, turns out he appears to be responsible for the shooting. This is a stretch by the defense, just looking for a loop-hole to get this guy off on a technicality. I would hope this attempt goes nowhere!   more ›

With all due respect I would doubt that the national press would consider this story good reading. Sad and tragic yes, but pretty un-extraordinary as far as murders go. There is lots of evidence and the motive is primitive, clear and uncomplicated (robbery). After reading the story there doesn't really seem to be much to question or talk about-- even for me who comments on pretty much everything.   more ›
