Nearly six weeks after a mass shooting, fire and sprinkler damage physically ruined Azana Salon & Spa, the shop will reopen Saturday with a renovation that includes tributes to the three women who died.
From chaos to tranquility, damage to repair, old to new. At the foot of Azana Salon & Spa's main doors that Radcliffe Haughton entered and unleashed a deadly mass shooting six weeks ago now lies a granite plaque honoring the three women he killed. Reopening of spa Saturday will begin the next chapter in the story of the Azana Spa family – the healing.
When Tami Gemmell arrived at Azana Salon and Spa on Oct. 21, the business she has run for 13 years and owned for the past 10, the worst of a nightmarish tragedy was over. Three women were dead, four more seriously wounded, many more left in shock and terror. But that was over. At three years old, the day care children really don't understand what happened to their teacher, Miss Courtney. They just know her leg was hurt but it's getting better and they helped her by doing what they could to help set up a center raffle and auction. The auction — which is open to the public through Monday and features coveted items like a shovel autographed by the "grave digger" former Green Bay Packer Gilbert Brown — is boosting the spirits of Miss Courtney, 22, who was one of the survivors of the Azana Salon & Spa mass shooting. A charity auction was held at 8-Twelve MVP Bar & Grill in Brookfield to benefit the children of the women killed in the Azana Salon & Spa shooting.
Updated Tuesday: Today's TMJ4 says between tickets and the silent auction, 8-twelve's fundraiser raised more than $60,000 for the families of the who died in the Azana spa shooting. ______________________ A packed house at 8-Twelve MVP Bar & Grill in Brookfield Monday night raised $20,000 just in tickets — plus more from rare finds in a silent auction, such as Aaron Rodgers game-worn playoff cleats. Keith Hanson had watched his daughter, Maelyn Lind, fight her way through financial trouble and work three jobs to support her four children. He had seen her inner strength and compassion. What was supposed to be a peaceful, relaxing day at Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield turned into a nightmare Sunday morning when 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, of Brown Deer, killed three women in the salon where his estranged wife worked before taking his own life. A registered nurse, Betty Brunner, was about to have her hair done by Haughton’s wife, Zina Haughton, when the shooter walked into the spa. Brunner told Newsradio 620 WTMJ that Zina Haughton distracted the man, telling him to calm down, so others could get away from Haughton. But Haughton grabbed Zina Haughton by the shoulders, dragged her toward the pedicure area and opened fire, Brunner told the radio station.
