THIS INSPIRING STORY BROUGHT TO YOU BY GRAPE-NUTS

How Danny Gokey Overcame One of Life's Toughest Moments

To honor the memory of his late wife, "American Idol" singer turned the tragedy into a national foundation that is helping children and the less fortunate. Sponsored by Grape-Nuts.

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains. Danny Gokey is living the American Dream. He was a choir director at his local Milwaukee church when he auditioned for "American Idol," finished in third place in 2009, and parlayed that into a successful country music career in Nashville. Gokey has a new wife, an infant son and a book ("Hope In Front of Me") expected to be published in October. But with all his success, Gokey still faces the challenge of honoring the memory of his first wife, Sophia, who died young due to complications from a congenital heart …

It jealousy, Nancy. Plain jealousy. What people are really saying when they chose to cut down someone they have never met who has more success than them is, "Wow, you came from relatively nothing and made your own name for yourself and here I sit, faceless behind a computer screen passing judgement because I am jealous of your success." Well, at least that's the way I see it.   more ›

Waukesha Native Stephanie Schimel Eliminated From 'American Idol'

Stephanie Schimel made it to the final 21 girls on Season 12 of the FOX show but was eliminated.

Stephanie Schimel's run on American Idol ended Thursday night with a performance of "Home" by Phillip Phillips. The 2010 Waukesha West High School graduate had her second chance on Idol — despite anything Nicki Minaj had to say about her in the Chicago auditions. The judges favored Schimel in the begining, except for Nicki Minaj who said Schimel didn't "wow" her.  The Schimel made it to Hollywood on Season 10 and was eliminated in the first round.  "I made it to top 21 girls! I had so much fun being part of Idol this year!" she wrote on her Facebook page. "Thank you all so much for the support! :D Blessed!" Schimel, who lives in Tennessee, told Waukesha Patch she’s been singing for “as long as I can remember.” She taught herself to play …

Watching Idols from all the way on the southern tip of Africa, I was stunned that Stephanie didn't go through, especially compared to some of the other candidates chose for bizarre style over substance. Hopefully tho', with this exposure, this talented young lady will have the great career she deserves.   more ›

Waukesha Week in Review: Jan 13-19

American Idol dreams and a car going into the Fox River among some of the news in the past week in Waukesha.

It's been a busy week here in Waukesha – weird crime, some business controversy and a few good stories too, The Good As a Patch editor, I always like to be able to tell stories about people who overcome hardships to become a better person. While you can't always escape your past, you can change your future. That's why I loved talking to Korie Ratelle this week at Waukesha North High School – she was one of the most fun, energetic, upbeat people I've interviewed in a long time. I'm really excited to see what she does with her life as she goes off to college in the next few years! And Waukesha West High School should be singing a joyful song. Or...they should be watching a 2010 graduate singing. Stephanie Schimel ticked off Nicki Minaj with …

Waukesha West Grad's Going to Hollywood [UPDATED]

Stephanie Schimel advances to Hollywood despite criticism from Nicki Minaj.

Waukesha West High School graduate is getting her second chance – despite anything Nicki Minaj had to say. Stephanie Schimel told Waukesha Patch that while judges in Season 10 of American Idol loved her, when it came to the Season 12 auditions, Minaj was a tough one to please. "Going into the audition, I thought she was going to be the one to like me," Schimel said about Minaj. Instead, Schimel said Minaj told her she has a "pretty voice, pretty face, but it doesn’t look like I have it." "She isn’t my biggest fan," Schimel said. It didn't matter. Schimel is on her way to Hollywood for the second time. She was kicked off the show in the first round of Hollywood in Season 10. Only minutes into the show, Schimel's Facebook page was filled …

American Idol Dreams: Will Waukesha Native Go to Hollywood?

Stephanie Schimel, a Waukesha West High School graduate, will appear on the American Idol auditions Thursday night.

Stephanie Schimel’s hoping for a second chance at being an American Idol. The Class of 2010 Waukesha West High School graduate made it to Hollywood on Season 10. And she was eliminated in the first round. “The best advice I have even been given is to not give up and just keep going with something you want to do,” Schimel said in her Season 10 Road to Hollywood video. “Even if it takes a long time, I still think you can succeed in something you really want to do.” Schimel told Waukesha Patch she’s been singing for “as long as I can remember.” She taught herself to play the guitar in middle school and the ukulele in high school. Schimel, who now lives in Tennessee, can’t say whether or not she will make it past judges Randy Jackson, Mariah …

Singer Danny Gokey Says 'It Could Be Time for a Change' in the White House

Former "Idol" star, who performed at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, says he is more aware of politics than ever before.

TAMPA, FL -- When you think about presidential politics, the name "Danny Gokey" isn't the first thing that comes to mind. And to be honest, politics has never really been on the mind of Gokey, either — at least not until the former "American Idol" star got married in January to model Leyicet Peralta. "I’ve never been a student of politics, but my wife and I have differing views, so it has made me really look at what I have always believed," Gokey told Patch shortly after performing on the floor of the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night. "You know, we’re raised a certain way and we tend to believe things that our parents tell us. "This is the first time that I’ve really taken a hard look at our system, and I kind of am taking…

Reality TV Casting Call: American Idol Producer Looking for Family-Run Businesses

American Idol Producer Nigel Lythgoe is looking for a family run business to feature in a new reality series, but not just any business. This new show will have a twist.

Wanna be on a TV reality show? Nigel Lythgoe, producer of the hit reality TV shows, "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol" is casting for a new reality show about a family run business. It's no secret that family dynamics can be dramatic. But Lythgoe is taking the drama a step further by profiling a business run by a family that includes someone who's been diagnosed with a medical disorder.  According to casting producer Michael Warwick, the goal of the show is to show America how one person’s “disorder” is another man’s “success.” The series will take viewers into the lives of a family that works together and supports each other running a family business. Producers say they're looking for men and women of all ages whose special …
