Should I use a heated or non heated storage unit? Is a common question we get here in Waukesha.
Here are some guidelines to help you decide if you should be using a heated or unheated unit:
When to use a heated unit:
1) If the item includes electronics - electronics are sensitive to temperature fluxuations - especially during those Wisconsin winters, when it could be freezing one day, then sunny and 45 the next. Any condensation within the electronic unit when it warms up can cause the unit to fail.
2) If the item contains any fluids that could freeze/expand in the cold - if you have ever left a water bottle in the freezer, you understand that things containing liquid can expand and explode when it gets cold out. Anything containing fluids such as some craft items, pharmaceutical items, liquid cleaners, and beverage collections should be in heated storage.
3) Glass items - Glass is also sensitive to large fluctuation in temperature. Of course, not all glass items absolutely need to be stored in heated storage, but use your discretion, or ask us at Scenic Self Storage whether or not your item needs heated storage.
Generally, most things can be stored in unheated storage besides the items listed above. Feel free to call a storage professional at 262-542-8833 if you have any questions about what should, or doesn't have to be stored in heated storage.
