Wisconsin and Gay Marriage

In the last several years the national support for Gay marriage has taken off. There has been a groundswell of support both nationally and even in Wisconsin. Wisconsin made the decision to alter it's constitution in 2006 to define marriage even further than the traditional "husband and wife" label to define it clearer which purposefully banned gay marriage.

Nationally we have seen the collapse of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act which added some teeth to individual state bans, and we have seen many advancements made by groups suing to gain legal recognition of their marriage (prop 8). Eventually the Supreme Court is going to rule on this issue in a more comprehensive way. They have been flirting on the border of some of the State by State lawsuits they have responded to. But it is becoming more and more apparent that Gay Marriage will be legalized in states that want it and probably in those that don't.

Is this right? There are a few ways to look at this issue. As a small government conservative should the government (state, federal or local) have any say whatsoever in marriage definitions? As a Christian should my personal beliefs about a subject that was taboo for decades be overlooked to fit an agenda? Is it constitutional to have a couple be legally married in one state but not recognized by the federal government?

I get uncomfortable when people classify the gay section of our population as evildoers. It is not our job to judge anyone, it is God's. I personally welcome a time when this issue is settled one way or another and we can get back to discussing issues that truly affect all Wisconsinites. I'm sure those that are homosexual agree that they would rather spend time worrying about other things too. No matter how this plays out we will have to accept the results. History will judge those that publically announce their positions one way or the other. It will be interesting to see how.
