Food Pantry Provides Garden Fresh Food To Clients

Over 11,000 people use the Food Pantry of Waukesha County over the past year, which is the highest number of people the agency has ever served.

So how do they feed that many people?

Charlotte Borcher, the food resource manager, and Karen Tredwell, executive director, explained that they wanted to expand the food choices their clients could pick from, which included offering fresh food. So they started a garden last year and this year they expanded the footprint of that garden. Last year alone it produced over 500 pounds of food, which included lettuce, tomatoes, spinach and peppers.

What's interesting though is the sense of community the garden brought out in people. Volunteers and clients, who simply wanted to give back, have been helping to take care of the garden.

"And that has been an unexpected surprise," Borcher said.
