Area Girls Basketball Teams Get Tournament Assignments

The field is set for the quest to get to Madison

After waiting a week after the boys received their seeds for the Sunday night was the girl’s turn to find out their path to Madison.

Similar to the boy’s tournament, three of the area schools, North, South and West high schools, are in the same Division 1 sectional, while Catholic Memorial is in a Division 2 sectional.

The UW-Oshkosh Super Tuesday No. 3 Sectional features 19 teams broken into two sub-sectionals. The three Division 1 area schools are seeded in the bottom sub-sectional with 10 other teams.

The Waukesha South Blackshirts lead the pack of area schools as the fourth seed. By virtue of the seed, the lady Blackshirts receive a bye into the regional final round where they will host Sussex Hamilton on Saturday, March 12.

The match-up will feature a pair of highly recruited seniors in South’s Katy Allen, headed to the University of Pennsylvania, and Hamilton’s Courtney Lemon, a Northern Michigan recruit.

Allen is averaging 13.6 points per game on the season and has teamed up with teammate Eileen Van Horn (11.7 points per game) to create one of the best scoring back court tandems in the state. South will rely heavily on sophomore forward Lexi Weitzer to counter the size that Hamilton has in the front court.

West

The Waukesha West Wolverines are seeded two spots behind South at sixth. The lady Wolverines also earned a bye into the regional finals where they will travel to Arrowhead to face the Warhawks for the third time on the season on Saturday, March 12.

The teams split the two regular season meetings with West winning at Arrowhead 51-47 and Arrowhead returning the favor at West with a narrow 53-52 victory.

Guard Michelle Farrow leads West offensively with 11.4 points per game. The sophomore had two of her best games of the season versus the Warhawks averaging 15.5 for the two. She hopes to continue that trend in the playoffs.

North

The youthful Waukesha North Northstars struggled to an 0-13 finish in Classic Eight Conference play. They will try their luck out with a North Shore Conference team as they travel to Germantown for the regional semi-final.

Freshmen forward Elizabeth Kelliher and senior point guard Angie Greenman lead the team offensively with 7.4 points per game each. Greenman has saved her best games for last as she has averaged 14 points in her last two games and will look to carry that into the post-season.

The winner of this match-up will face the one seed Nicolet Knights, ranked second in the state for all Division 1 teams.

Division 2

In Division 2, the brackets are broken into four regionals per sectional. Catholic Memorial earned the fourth seed out of five teams in Sectional No. 4. The regional features two of the top four ranked teams in the state for Division 2.

The rest of the seeds are:

No. 1 New Berlin Eisenhower (19-2, 16-0 Woodland Conference Black Division)
No. 2 Pewaukee (20-1, 16-1 Woodland Conference Blue Division)
No. 3 New Berlin West (13-8, 12-5 Woodland Conference Blue Division)
No. 4 (9-12, 4-9 Classic Eight Conference)
No. 5 Whitnall (10-10, 8-8 Woodland Conference Black Division)

Catholic Memorial

As the four seed the Crusaders will host Whitnall on Tuesday, March 8, in the regional quarterfinals. The two teams met early in the season with Memorial pulling off a 38-33 victory.

Allison Mueller, a junior guard, will be key to the Crusaders’ attack. She averaged 13.1 points per game during the season and will look to keep that going in the playoffs.

If Memorial advances they will have to try and knock of the regionals top seed and second ranked team in the state in New Berlin Eisenhower.
