WCTC Gun Range Construction Nearing Completion

With the help of a fundraiser involving Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews and the support of businesses and business leaders in the area, WCTC is getting a gun range for training law enforcement.

Construction on the new Waukesha County Technical College gun range and training facility is nearing completion and soon law enforcement will have a central place to develop and maintaining their shooting skills.

The gun range will open Oct. 1, according to Brian Dorow, associate dean of criminal justice at WCTC.The project, which has been a seven-year long dream for Dorow, is being completed with the help of the community. Between a fundraiser featuring Green Bay Packers  linebacker Clay Matthews and donations from the community, the dream is finally being made a reality.

“We had over 25 businesses and business leaders that are helping with this project,” Dorow said.

The range, which is located in an industrial area on Hickory Street in Pewaukee, has been well researched, Dorow said. The construction has included reinforced walls for safety. The building also is being vented to keep fresh air flowing for the people using the range.

The primary use of the building is for the police academy at WCTC, as well as police in-service and specialized training. The building will also be open to the public, according to Dorow.

Dorow had spent the past year looking for the perfect location for the range. He was driving with other instructors, looking at properties for sale, when he said they “stumbled” across the Hickory Street location.

“We saw a big for lease sign,” Dorow said. “I said, ‘that is our building.’”
