West High Heading to Academic Decathlon Nationals
New Berlin Eisenhower ended their impressive streak of 11 state titles, but a second-place finish sends Waukesha West to next month's U.S. Academic Decathlon championships.
Despite failing to win the state Academic Decathlon for the first time in 12 years, Waukesha West will still attend the national finals next month.
West took second place overall with 46,768 points, behind new champion New Berlin Eisenhower. The second-place finish qualifies West for the U.S. Academic Decathlon national championships in Minneapolis, April 25-27.
Last year, West edged New Berlin Eisenhower by less than 400 points for its 11th consecutive state title. West went on to finish fourth overall at nationals, and first in Division 2.

The 30th annual state championships were at Glacier Canyon Conference Center/Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells, according to a news release. Students tested in art, mathematics, music, language and literature, economics, science, social science, interview, essay, and speech. Students also participated in a Super Quiz Relay, in front more than 500 spectators, the release said.
West earned the top team score in economics and music, and tied Green Bay West for the top score in interview.

Thomas Redding of West recorded a perfect score in the Honor category in math. He previous had earned a perfect score of 36 on the math portion of the ACT.
