Waukesha Teachers Attendance Remains Steady Despite Madison Rally

Assistant superintendent says that teachers have been following policy despite controversy.

Although some school districts in the state are closed today because of the number of teachers calling in sick to join the protest against Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill that would limit collective bargaining to wages and would not include benefits, the is another story.

“Our attendance has been excellence,” said Jack Bothwell, assistant superintendent for human resources and labor relations.

Attendance actually has increased later this week, Bothwell said. On Friday, 66 people were out on sick leave and 67 were out on Monday. Despite the rally in Madison, the number of employees on sick leave decreased to 55 on Tuesday, 53 on Wednesday and 56 are out today.

The number of regular employees that are in the district who would have to report their absences are about 1,500 employees, Bothwell said.

“For this time of year that is pretty good,” Bothwell said.

In terms of teachers’ performance and attendance this week, Bothwell said the district is happy with what has happened in Waukesha.

“People are being careful to work within our policies and what the statues require in controversial times,” he said.
