Students Fight Back Against Bullying, Harrassment at Waukesha North

Waukesha North High School students are fighting back against bullying and harassment this week.

An all-school assembly Wednesday morning featuring speaker and artist Eric Samuel Timm left many students emotional after his powerful message about “painting hope.”

After the assembly, students covered a “words hurt” display where students had written how words had personally hurt them. Instead of hurtful words and comments, the students covered the display with inspiring messages and words of hope and healing.

A coalition of Waukesha North student clubs has organized a comprehensive, school-wide campaign to combat bullying and harassment. These “Empowerment Week” efforts are taking place the week of March 11–15 and include a variety of activities meant to raise awareness and educate students and staff on the effects of bullying.

After months of preparation, the students began their efforts Feb. 21 with a student-led staff training that included analysis of student/staff climate survey results, the sharing of students’ own stories of bullying, and training on how to address bullying/harassment situations.
