Waukesha Math Proficiency Increases, Reading Proficiency Decreases in State Assessment

Students in the Waukesha school district have increased slightly in math proficiency this school year while reading proficiency percentages have dipped .5% district wide.

Across the state, reading and math scores have increased, according to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Overall, 48.6 percent of students scored proficient or advanced in mathematics on the WKCE. Waukesha was slightly ahead of the state average with 50 percent of district students scoring proficient or advanced in mathematics Achievement was 1.8 percentage points higher than mathematics proficiency was five years ago, according to the news release. In reading, 36.6 percent of students scored proficient or advanced statewide; Waukesha students scored just above the state average with 37.3 percent scoring at proficient or advanced levels.

Nearly half the students taking the assessment statewide – 42.4 percent – were identified as living in poverty.

“Among students who are economically disadvantaged or who have a disability, achievement in mathematics and reading increased this year from five years ago, though achievement gaps are large,” states the DPI news release. “Math and reading achievement for English language learners is down from five years ago.”
