Top Ways to Help the Waukesha Salvation Army

Back to School means extra needs for community.

No kid ever wants to think about going back to school, however, I am sure there are a large population of parents who are going to do a happy dance when Sept. 1, the first day for Waukesha public schools, comes around.  As you are thinking about back to school, so is the   Therefore, I give you the top needs for back to school at the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army would like Waukesha County residents to know that if you haven’t already applied for a backpack containing back to school supplies and you absolutely can not afford school supplies this year, their will be a late backpack distribution on next Monday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to noon and then again from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. located at 445 Madison St. The hours will be the same all week until all school supplies are gone.  Backpacks are given out on a first come first serve basis and there are no guarantees.

We do need volunteers to help out throughout next week to hand out backpacks to parents and children. You must be able to stand on your feet for an extended period of time and lift between 25-30 pounds. You can sign up to volunteer on our website http://www.waukeshasalvationarmy.org and clicking on “volunteer now.”  As long as we are on the topic of volunteering, the Salvation Army is looking for volunteer music teachers for our youth program.  For more information, contact director of Youth Ministries Cheri Winchowky at 262-547-7367 ext. 238.  The Salvation Army also is particularly in need of donations of brass instruments.

I first started helping out at the Waukesha Salvation Army with a friend.  On a Thursday afternoon, Christina and I would go and pack snack packs, backpacks of food given to children at area schools who don’t have adequate food on the weekends.  Some things we like to pack in the snack packs include boxed meals I.E. Hamburger Helper, cereal/granola bars, instant oatmeal packets, canned meats including chicken or tuna and canned soups or stews.  These snack packs make a world of difference for children and their families!  Please consider donating some of the above items for our snack pack program.

It’s always good to plan a head right? The Waukesha Salvation Army would like your school/community group to organize a food drive.  During the months of November and December, be part of the Waukesha Salvation Army food drive challenge.  The school that collects the most food will win the coveted “golden can.”  has won the trophy the past few years.  Who is up for the challenge of beating the reigning champs?  Those are the top ways to help the Salvation Army with back to school. Happy helping!
