PHOTOS: Carroll Freshmen Serve Community

The record class of freshmen began their college careers with a community service day Monday. The students, who moved on campus Friday, provided free labor to 21 community organizations.

 “Community service is an integral part of the total Carroll experience,” said Dr. Theresa Barry, dean of students. “Most of our freshmen come to Carroll with community service experience, and we want to foster and develop that. This community service day is a great way to introduce our students to the larger community and to help our community partners learn what a great resource Carroll University is.”

Groups of students worked on five projects for the and three projects for the Waukesha County Park System. In addition, students will worked at:

• Green Power Gardens: W230S4313 Milky Way Road, Waukesha; harvesting producethat goes to the Waukesha County Food Pantry and Hope Center.
• New Threads of Hope: 801 S. 60th St., Milwaukee; sorting donations of clothing.
• Urban Ecology Center: 1500 E. Park Place, Milwaukee; mulching trails and removing invasive plants.
• TYME Out Retreat Center: W332N6786 County Road C, Nashotah; cleaning.
• Salvation Army: 445 Madison St., Waukesha.
• Hunger Task Force: 9000 S. 68th St., Franklin; harvesting produce.
• Havenwoods State Forest: 6141 N. Hopkins St., Milwaukee; mulching trails and removing invasive plants.
• Greene Field Station: Carroll's 60-acre outdoor classroom in the town of Genesee for biology and environmental science students; invasive species removal.
• The Women's Center: 505 N. East Ave., Waukesha; yard maintenance.
• Stepping Stones Farm: 1439 92nd St., Franksville; building project.
• Elmbrook Humane Society: 20950 Enterprise Ave., Brookfield; outdoor cleanup.
• United Community Center: 1111 S. 6th St., Milwaukee; outing for seniors.
• LindenGrove: 425 N. University Dr., Waukesha; painting the railings.
• Food Pantry of Waukesha County: 1301 Sentry Dr., Waukesha; cleaning project and  repackaging food.
• Wehr Nature Center: 9701 W College Ave., Franklin; mulching trails and removing invasive species.
• Richard's Place: 1079 Whiterock Ave., Waukesha; outdoor landscaping.
• MS Society of Wisconsin: 1120 James Drive, Hartland; preparations for three-day Challenge Walk.
• Hadfield Elementary School: 733 Linden Ave., Waukesha; preparing classrooms and bulletin boards.
• Adaptive Community Approach Program: Dunbar Bridge, Dunbar Ave, Waukesha; mural painting.

Support for Freshman Community Service Day was provided by Jenzabar, Inc., a leading provider of software, services and strategies for higher education and the primary benefactor of the Jenzabar Foundation, an organization focused on providing support for service and leadership among higher education students.

Classes begin Thursday at the four-year college with nearly 1,000 new students. The new students include 819 freshmen and 176 transfer students.

Full-time undergraduate enrollment will be about 2,830. Total enrollment, including part-time and graduate students, will be about 3,440.

The 819 freshmen constitute the largest freshman class in Carroll history.
