Mock Accident Demonstration Warns Students of Drunken, Texting and Driving Dangers

Waukesha West High School sophomores and juniors experience a crash scene at their school in the presentation of "Forever Changed."

A group of Waukesha West High School sophomores and juniors had a chance to see the effects of distracted and drunken driving can have on their lives. A mock accident demonstration that included the Waukesha Police Department, the Waukesha Fire Department and Flight for Life taught the students about the impact their decisions can have on their lives.

The demonstration, which was held on Thursday, included a scenario of drunken driving, driving while texting and not wearing a seat belt.  The outcomes to the different actors – Becca Clifford, Austin Della, Scott Enders, Thomas MacCudden and Katie Sallman – ranged from paralysis, brain damage, decades in prison and, in the case of Austin, instant death.

Each student had a story about how they were on track to be star college athletes and promising careers as doctors and lawyers. Their lives forever changed in the accident.

“I want to see all of you back here safely, not just after spring break but all the way through your graduation and every single day beyond that,” said Principal Melissa Thompson.

The demonstration was put on by Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin and the Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter at Waukesha West High School.

For Waukesha Police Officer Jason Fink, a drug recognition expert, the heart of his message was to the point with five words he told the students following the exercise.

“Please, don’t drink and drive,” Fink said.
