Locals Combine to Bring ‘Urinetown’

University of Wisconsin-Waukesha opens its musical comedy about a city where you even have to pay to pee.

Urinetown, a summer musical comedy, opens this Friday at University of Wisconsin-Waukesha and the cast is packed with local people.

Urinetown, written by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, opened on Broadway in September 2001. The comedy “depicts a world wracked by ecological disaster and corporate greed,” a news release from UW-Waukesha states. “In a Gotham-like city, a depletion of the earth's water supply has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The privilege to pee is regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs.”

Associate Professor of Communication & Theatre Arts Steven Decker, Waukesha, is directing and set/lighting designing the play. Professional dancer/choreographer Shell M. Benjamin, Shorewood, who has a list of Broadway and off-Broadway credits, is choreographing the show. Assistant Professor of Music Nancy Van Brunt, Waukesha, and Professor of Music Craig Hurst, Waukesha, will assist with the musical direction and conducting of the production.
