Golf Outing To Benefit UW-Waukesha Students

Event raised more than $7,500 in 2010.

Golf can be a game of enjoyable outdoor recreation or intense competition. On June 21 at Western Lakes Golf Club in Pewaukee, it will be a game of charity.

The annual UW-Waukesha Foundation Golf Event is in its eighth year. The event benefits students who attend UW-Waukesha through the foundation scholarship. This scholarship is designed to give encouragement and financial aid to students.

“This has been a great experience for all who attend,” said Phil Zweifel , associate professor of English and associate dean at UW-Waukesha.”

The golf outing was the brainchild of former university Dean Brad Stewart, who suggested it would be a good fundraiser, Zweifel said.

Hopes are that the event will raise $10,000 this year, said Lillian Boese, executive director of the UW-Waukesha Foundation. The event made $7,500 last year, and the amount has continued to go up each year.

“This has been a very productive way to increase funds,” said Russ Launder, a former UW-Waukesha student (1977-79) and a member of the foundation board. “The atmosphere has been great and there is plenty of interesting stuff going on.”

The event has continued to grow in attendance, he said.

“There is a good chance that 60 to 70 people will show up this year. But I believe that number could get up to 100,” Launder said.

It helps that the dinner-only option is just $35, he said.

“Just come for dinner,” Launder said. “You do not have to golf.”

An early bird special is $100, including golfing. After June 1, it costs $125 per golfer. Included in the package is lunch, golf carts, driving range, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and silent and live auctions. Some of the items that will be auctioned off are lunch and golf for three at Brandybrook or Bristlecone Pines, a behind-the-scenes tour at the zoo, a Harley-Davidson men’s jacket with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Harley museum and a backpack cooler with goodies.
