GE Volunteers Spruce Up Hawthorne School

About 180 volunteers and school staff members were busy at Hawthorne Elementary School preparing for the start of a new school year.

Since Hawthorne is becoming a science, technology, engineering and mathematics magnet school this year, the school had plenty of work for the 150 volunteers from GE Energy and GE Healthcare this year. In addition to updating classrooms, volunteers also were spending time painting - including murals - and landscaping.

GE wants to encourage students to pursue careers in engineering and skilled trades, according to GE Energy President Brian White.

"We are a big part of this community," White said. "They give to us all the time. We have to give back."
