Exercise Science Symposium at Carroll

A national expert in sports medicine and exercise physiology will present an exercise science symposium at Carroll University on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011. Dr. William Kraemer will lecture on “Hydration Needs for Performance and Training: Behavior, Physiology and Environment” beginning at 12:30 p.m., with question and answer session to follow, in the Stackner Ballroom of the Campus Center, 101 N. East Ave., Waukesha. This event is free and open to the public.

Kraemer is a professor in the departments of kinesiology, physiology and neurobiology at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. He also is a professor of medicine at the UConn Health School of Medicine Center on Aging. Earlier in his career, he was a Carroll faculty member in the physical education and biology departments, and coached wrestling and football. He has also worked for Ball State University, Indiana School of Medicine, Pennsylvania State University, Boston University, and as a commissioned officer at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Massachusetts.

In service to his profession, Kraemer is a fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and was a member of its Board of Trustees and Administrative Council. He is the current president elect of the New England chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine and past-president of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is a fellow in the American College of Nutrition and the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

Kraemer has received numerous awards, including the NSCA Outstanding Sports Scientist Award in 1992 and the NSCA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994, for his contributions to bringing science into the field of strength and conditioning. He also received the NSCA’s Educator of the Year Award in 2002.

Kraemer is editor-in-chief of the “Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research,” an associate editor of “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise,” an editor for the “European Journal of Applied Physiology” and is on the editorial board for the “Journal of Applied Physiology.” He has authored and co-authored more than 390 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the scientific literature related to sports medicine, exercise endocrinology and sport science, and has authored or co-authored 10 books in the areas of strength training and exercise physiology. Kraemer’s most recent book, “Exercise Physiology: Integrating Theory and Application,” was published in March 2011.
