Dr. Stephanie Wilbrand, a lecturer of geography at the University of Girona in Spain, will visit on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011. She will discuss “Geopolitics of Water in the Mediterranean: The North-South Contrast in the Perception of Water Issues,” at 7 p.m. in the Stackner Ballroom of the Campus Center, 101 N. East Ave., Waukesha. This event is free and open to the public.
Wilbrand introduces several factors putting pressure on water use in the Mediterranean region: 1. rapid demographic changes, with permanent or seasonal increases in population (particularly in urban and coastal areas), 2. the high consumption of water for irrigated agriculture, and 3. water pollution and the deterioration of water resources due to various anthropological interventions. Climate change can also add to the vulnerability of water systems and their complexity, increasing the impact of these pressures.
Her analysis of various water issues includes the characteristic water shortage in most Mediterranean countries, its essential impact on their economic and social development, and maintenance of Mediterranean ecosystems. She also will provide a review of possible solutions.

Wilbrand’s talk is part of the university’s yearlong exploration of WATER: the essential element of life on earth, an interdisciplinary-themed series that will explore our relationships with water on personal, regional and global levels.
