Two students have been recognized for their creative writing by the August Derleth Society.

Owen Abbott (Pewaukee) won the August Derleth/Hugo Schwenker Award’s 2011 writing prize for his non-fiction essay Stayfree Carefree, and Mollie Nelson (Waukesha) was an honorable mention selection for her short story Higher.

The writing contest was open to students throughout the UW Colleges. The August Derleth Society, a Sauk City-based organization, promotes and preserves the work of the Wisconsin native, a prolific writer who died in 1971.

Abbott, a second-year student whose essay also appeared in the UW-Waukesha literary journal The Windy Hill Review, said the ability to write clearly is the ability to think clearly. “It’s worth practicing outside of classes and outside of formats for this reason alone,” he said.
