The Waukesha County Labor Council awarded two $1,000 scholarships yesterday to two high school students whose parents are union employees. The yearly scholarships are given in memory of George Urban. Urban was a long time President of the Waukesha Labor Council and negotiated for the labor liaison position at United Way in Waukesha County. The two recipients of the scholarships were Michelle Lee, a student at Oak Creek High School, and Tyler Holman, a student at Kettle Moraine High School.

Lee, a graduating senior at Oak Creek High School, is the daughter of Jerome K. Lee, a union worker with the I.B.E.W. Local 494. In her time as a student at Oak Creek High School, Lee was involved with many extracurricular activities such as Freshman Mentoring, Spanish Club, Tennis, and Renaissance, which is a volunteer group. Lee is graduating this year with a 3.77 cumulative G.P.A. and plans to attend the Milwaukee School of Engineering. She said that she is looking to pursue a career with organized labor and is happy that her family has had three generations of union members. She is proud to become the fourth. Her mathematics teacher, David G. Hyatt, said, “Michelle is a bright girl with a great personality. She is an outgoing young lady, yet not boisterous. Michelle is extremely courteous and polite and brings a smile and friendly attitude to class each day.”

Holman, also a senior, is graduating from Kettle Moraine High School and holds a 3.885 G.P.A. He is the son of Thomas and Julianna Holman. Holman’s father, Thomas, is a member of the Bricklayers Local #8. Holman plans to study biomedical engineering with a specialization in prosthetics at either UW-Madison or UW-Whitewater. Holman’s involvement in and out of school includes: Key Club (Kiwanis), orchestra, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Japanese Club, National Honor Society, KMHS Summer Musical, Aikido, and SMART (Students Modeling a Research Topic). Stephen Plum, AP Biology instructor and SMART moderator, said of Holman, “Tyler is a very respectful and thoughtful student. He is respected by his peers and by teachers as well. His comments and contributions are thoughtful and humorous. I look forward to his future and know that Tyler will positively contribute to people and their lives.”
