Mayor Scrima to Participate in Mayor's Day of Recognition on April 9

Mayor Scrima will participate in National Mayors Day of Recognition on April 9 with former Mayor Lombardi.

Waukesha Mayor Scima will be showing his support for the community through a volunteer experience on Waukesha’s first ever celebration of Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service on April 9, 2013. The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is an opportunity for mayors across the country to highlight the impact of volunteerism in their communities and to thank those who serve. The initiative has support from a diverse range of mayors from across the country, including big cities (Michael Bloomberg of New York, Vincent Gray of Washington, D.C., Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, and Rahm Emanuel of Chicago). Philadelphia Mayor, Michael A. Nutter, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors said, “National service is a vital resource for America’s cities. By unleashing the power of citizens, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs have a positive and lasting impact – making our cities better places to live.”

Scrima will be joined by former Mayor Carol Lombardi and the two will be tutoring math students at the Blair Elementary School Math Club. The Math Club is a voluntary math program for students who would like a little help developing their math skills. The program is available to students in grades K-5 and takes place over a portion of their lunch hour. Students play math games tailored to their skill level, games range from simple counting games to games of Yahtzee. Volunteers who normally play the math games with the children are a part of RSVP, a program of Interfaith Senior Programs that is under the umbrella of SeniorCorps within the Corporation for National and Community Service.

By committing to volunteerism Mayor Scrima also became the 155th newest volunteer for United Way in Waukesha County’s Strive for 5 goal to recruit more than 500 new readers, tutors, or mentors for Waukesha County. “We are delighted to see the collaboration of volunteers in Waukesha. We each can renew our community by starting small, starting here and starting now” Scrima said regarding the experience. If you are interested in pledging to become a reader, tutor, or mentor please visit www.UnitedWayWaukesha.org/volunteer. The team at the United Way Volunteer Center will connect you with an opportunity that matches your interests and needs.
