Waukesha County Executive Reacts to Judge's Ruling on Bill Limiting Unions

Waukesha superintendent won't comment until reviewing more information on Dane County decision.

Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas said in a prepared statement that he was disappointed in the Dane County judge’s ruling that struck down the controversial bill that limits most public union workers’ collective bargaining rights.

Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi released a 33-page decision Thursday nullifying Act 10, which prompted thousands of protesters to crowd the state Capitol for weeks.

“The ruling is a temporary setback to the much-needed reforms that will help local governments operate in a more efficient manner, keep taxes low, and deliver high quality, necessary services,” Vrakas said in the statement. “The ruling also perpetuates uncertainty as local governments enter a critical period where we are developing our 2012 budgets.”

Waukesha Superintendent Todd Gray would not comment on the judge’s decision until he had more time to review it.

The judge’s decision would likely not immediately affect the city of Waukesha’s budget as the union contracts are set to expire in December 2012.
