Tommy Thompson's Son Jokes About Sending Obama Back to Kenya [Video]

Former governor says he was unaware of comment made by his son at Kenosha fundraiser on Sunday. Jason Thompson has now issued an apology.

UPDATE: Jason Thompson, former governor Tommy Thompson's son, issues an apology for a joke he made about Obama yesterday.

Speaking at a fundraiser in Kenosha on Sunday, the son of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson joked about sending President Barack Obama back to Kenya.

ORIGINAL STORY: Jason Thompson spoke at a GOP brunch attended by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and state party Chairman Brad Courtney.

As seen on a YouTube video, Jason Thompson tells supporters: "We have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago — or Kenya."

Those in the room applauded the comment, and one woman can be heard saying, "We're taking donations for that Kenya trip."

Tommy Thompson, who apparently was not at the event, told reporters Sunday night that he was unaware of his son's comment. "I haven't seen a video," he said.

Asked whether he was at the fundraiser, Tommy Thompson said: "'I don't know what you're talking about," and repeated that he hadn't seen anything.

A spokesman for Thompson's campaign told the website BuzzFeed, which first reported the incident, that Jason Thompson "said something that he should not have and he apologizes."

Thompson is locked in a tight battle for the U.S. Senate race with Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, whose campaign declined to comment on the incident.

Graeme Zielinski, communications director for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, said: "These tactics have no place in our politics and we hope Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and Reince Preibus will disavow these comments immediately."

Great comment Vicki. You are one great woman for honesty and decency which the GOP has little if any left. Women should reject all the republican attempts against birth control, family planning and Planned Parenthood. They should know that the republicans instead of doing one thing after taking over Congress in 2010 on jobs. They did not work one minute to create any jobs. They lied. But they did go right after women's rights to decide what they can do concerning birth control, invitro-fertilization and abortion. Voting 300 times against the Affordable Care Act really magnifies how little these right wing republicans spent in any way doing the people's business of helping the country. It was non-existent.

Yes birthers loved it. Just like all the people around Romney would have loved it. Just like all the people around most republicans would love it. We who are not republicans are sickened by the low information people who have no facts and have no decency and won't look up the facts that they are determined to believe but that are lies.

Arthurp No President Obama is a U.S. citizen and believe me if he was not he would not be the President of the United States of America. To be the president you have to meet many requirements and one is being a U.S. citizen, but to you idiots that will never meet with your low information and very unintelligent minds. I hate birthers and I hate ignorance but there is a lot of ignorance in the republican party and many of you commenters are a big success for the GOP billionaires who want people to be ignorant and believe their lies and not have the sense to see that the GOP is for billionaires and no one else.

This is the republican base. They want those lies and want to believe those lies. It works so well for the party of republican billionaires.

veryvila-who is misinformed. You think that everyone voting GOP is a billionaire?? I make $11 an hour..really a rich person. This election is about who holds my values; and it is not Baldwin. She voted 4 times against Iran sanctions, voted against an appropriations bill for military funding that gave them body armour, ammo, weapons, etc. and also included hurricane relief and border security..all things I am for. The billionaire comments are repeated rhetoric from your news sources MSNBC and the other left wing propaganda news. Since when has working hard to be successful been a bad thing-Since Barrack Obama has been in the White House. Now success is scorned. Romney donated 30% to charity-are you saying he doesn't care? What a dolt you are. All the nasty stuff the Dems have done-the latest stuff is beat up Chad Lee's campaign manager, and Sen. Neal Kedzie's son was also beat up when he yelled to a liberal tearing his Romney sign out of his yard. Physical violence-and your worried about a Kenya statement. Go watch Obama's 2016 and then let's talk. I dare you.
