Suspended Commissioner Resigns From Post
Dan Owens is accused by city leaders of stealing scrap metal while working for the Waukesha Department of Public Works.
Waukesha Police & Fire Commissioner Dan Owens has resigned from the government board after Mayor Jeff Scrima suspended him this week.
Owens and two other city employees are accused of stealing scrap metal from the city while working for the Department of Public Works. Owens maintains it was a long-time practice in the department to use the money for retirement lunches and other work perks.
In his resignation letter, Owens said he was stepping down for his family’s sake, as well as the financial burden of going through a removal hearing before Waukesha Common Council.

“I will assure each and every member of the Common Council that the allegations made in the mayor’s complaint are on true,” Owens said in the letter.

Owens is asking, however, that the Waukesha Common Council not appoint another commissioner until the disciplinary hearing against Fire Chief Jesse Alba is completed. City leaders are seeking Alba’s dismissal after allegations of sexual harassment emerged shortly after he was promoted to fire chief.
