Take heart – a large project could be completed soon.

The West Avenue reconstruction, ongoing since May, is expected to be completed by June 29, according to Alex Damien, engineer.

The project, stretching from Newhall Avenue north to Dunbar Street, was large and entailed reconstruction of the original roadway, which dated back to 1911, Damien said.

The work consists of replacement of sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, pavement, curb and gutter and traffic signals, according to the city.

Another ongoing large project in the city is just blocks away on Grand Avenue between Williams Street and Newhall Avenue. That project includes the temporary closing of the intersection of College and Grand avenues. The intersection is due to re-opened this week and will be controlled by stop signs until later this summer.

Work on Grand Avenue is anticipated to be complete around August 24, according to Damien. In the meantime, a detour will be posted using Wisconsin and East avenues and Sunset Drive. The work consists of replacing sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, pavement, curb and gutter and traffic signals.

On the other side of town, the city plans to close North Street between Barstow and Madison streets beginning Thursday. North Street is expected to re-open for one-lane traffic on Monday. A detour will be posted to direct traffic south on Barstow St. and then west on St. Paul Ave. This closure is needed for the continuation of the reconstruction of North Street and St Paul Avenue, according to the city.

Information on other street closings can be found on the city’s website here. Upcoming summer events that impact traffic in the city include the Carl Zach Bike Race Sunday, June 24, and the Fourth of July parade.
